presenters in these programmes had the potential to cause offence to viewers and listeners. However, we
concluded that both unscripted remarks came during live programmes which featured a broad range of
views about Brexit. We’ve reminded both broadcasters that ambiguous remarks, in programmes dealing
with polarising political issues, should be put fully into context.”

Teacher banned from class over inappropriate comments

A teacher who said he would “spank” and “pull” female pupils has been banned from the profession.
Timothy Richard Massey Moore has been struck off after making a series of inappropriate comments to
students at Clacton Coastal Academy in Essex which left them feeling “uncomfortable”. The humanities
teacher, 63, also made inappropriate and unnecessary physical contact with students – which included
tickling a pupil, the Teaching Regulation Agency panel concluded.

Mr Moore, who did not attend the misconduct hearing, told a pupil: “I would spank you but it would be a
bit inappropriate.” Speaking to another female pupil, he said: “I would love to be in a detention with you
three alone.” The teacher of 30 years also said that he would “pull” one of the female students to her
classmates.

The panel found Mr Moore’s actions during the 2016-17 school year amounted to both “unacceptable
professional conduct and conduct that may bring the profession into disrepute”, but did not find that the
teacher’s behaviour was “sexually motivated”, adding that the “risque” comments were likely to be linked to
his “flamboyant” and “eccentric character”. He continued to teach until April 2018, when a new allegation
of inappropriate physical contact with a pupil led to his dismissal in July 2018.

Man in hospital for bladder op leaves with circumcision

A man who went into hospital for a routine bladder operation has been paid £20,000 in compensation after
doctors accidentally circumcised him instead. Terry Brazier, 70, had his foreskin removed after the
Leicester Royal Infirmary mixed up his paperwork and mistook him for another patient. The shocked
pensioner only found out afterwards when the embarrassed doctors had to admit their mistake. “The nurse
was at the side of me and we were talking so I didn’t know what was going on,” he said.

Andrew Furlong, medical director at the University Hospitals of Leicester trust, said: “We remain deeply
and genuinely sorry that this mistake occurred, and I would like to take this opportunity to once again
apologise to Mr Brazier. Whilst money can never undo what happened, we hope this payment provides
some compensation.”
