Sporting Shooter UK – August 2019

CLAY NEWS

The ever-popular Krieghoff DTL took place at
Mid Wales Shooting Centre, where nearly 500
shooters took part in the four-day tournament.
Thursday’s 100-target event saw two 100/300s
from Jeff Cole and Ian Mullarkey, who proved to
be the class of the 270-strong field. By Friday
morning, the competitor ranks had swollen
dramatically to nearly 450, who were all hoping
their number would be up in the Lucky Numbers
event. Two numbers are taken at random, and if
your score ends in either of them, you go into a
shoot-off for a chance at representing your class
in the big money final. George Turnes and Jan
Powell emerged the survivors from the
shoot-off, having outshot the other three;
another tied round meant it would be decided
by sudden death, and both of the contenders
missed a target, their mistake being immediately
mirrored by their opponent. Eventually though,
Powell took the win and collected £1,000 in
cash for his efforts, though all five went home
with cash prizes.
The main event sees shooters competing
each day to win a spot in the two-way shoot-off
for a K-80 on Sunday evening, with the winner
of Saturday doing battle with Sunday’s victor.
The weather was fair on Saturday and seven
shooters managed to finish with a perfect
100/300 score, which forced a shoot-off to
establish who would go through to Sunday. In
the end, it was Dan Price whose Guerini

Invictus/Gamebore DTL Elite combination won
through in style. The conditions were far from
helpful on the Sunday though, and plenty of
contenders fell away as their rounds wore on.
Eventually only one could finish straight, and as
he fired his final shot the competition took a
turn in a new direction. For the very first
time, the winner of Saturday was also
the winner of Sunday; as unlikely a

scenario as it might be in a discipline so awash
with talent, the 2019 Krieghoff winner, Dan
Price, was crowned without having to fire a
single shot in the final! Instead, the crowd
witnessed the runner-up from each of the two
days going head to head to find the
second-placed competitor, with Willie
Armstrong eventually finishing third
behind Lee Byard.
