CRAMPTON CUSTOMS

So far, boost has been cranked to 22 psi on pump
fuel with more development to come. No dyno figures
as yet as the bike has only been tuned on the side of
the road so far but they say it has a “ton of torque
and pulls like a train!” The boys have found running a
conservative 15 psi on the street is working out fine.
An electric oil scavenge pump was added due to
the Shovelhead engine producing excessive back
pressure in the crankcase (a factory feature). The
scavenge pump now returns the turbo oil directly
to the top of the custom oil tank.
The custom manifold has also been recently
changed by adding a flexible joint in the rear header
pipe. This was done dbecause the Shovelhead
motor was actually moving with expansion, caus-
ing issues with the manifold mount. This kind of

modificationcomes under the heading of ‘blasting
through obstacles’ that I mentioned earlier.
An Ultima 2in open primary connects to an Ultima
five speed transmission and chain drive back to an
Exile sprocket brake where the rear brake and final
drive sprocket are combined into one unit. And there
is more, much more we could expound upon but
space limitations mean it is best covered by running
your eyes over the very extensive Guts&Bolts table.
It’s hard to imagine the time and effort that
has been poured into this unique custom, and the
brain-sapping problems that had to be overcome.
But man, the result! I’m sure if you asked the boys
the five years labour of love has been worth it the
answer would be a resounding “hell yeah!” And at
HEAVY DUTY we can only wholeheartedly agree! HD

Right: This gorgeous cafe racer was
also built by Luke Crampton. It’s an
XT 500 Yamaha single – with a Toyota
supercharger. The tank was made
from a Tooheys beer keg and the
headlight surround was originally a
wok! And check that beautiful front
brake! Words fail us ...

Yep, we'd be pretty
pleased too.
