unit then machined. There
is no provision for individual
component replacement. In the
past we have machined wheel
sets to take demountable shafts
but this operation is quite
expensive.
“If necessary, purchasing a
set of S&S flywheels is prob-
ably the most cost effective.
Authorised dealerships are not
in the business of promoting
aftermarket parts, especially
during a warranty period. They
have their own line of products
to service what they consider
appropriate for their product.
That is not to say that the after-
market products are inferior,
as there are a lot of excellent
alternative products out there
but you won’t find a dealer that
says, “Sure get someone else’s
stuff, it’s better than ours!”
“Nevertheless a lot of dealers
are happy to install what you
want, even aftermarket, but is

always done at your behest. I
find this very accommodating
on the dealers’ behalf
considering if you went into a
car dealership with your own
parts and asked them to fit
them they would very quickly
show you the door.”

SPROCKET RATIOS
Doc, a while back you
mentioned that you need to
keep the final drive sprocket
ratio uneven to prevent
uneven chain wear, example
21/48. What sort of excessive
chain wear would you expect
from an even sprocket ratio
such as 22/48 and why so?
I am currently working on
getting a 1989 Softail back
on the road. It has a chain
final drive but the front
sprocket is missing, I have
three rear sprockets, a 46, 48
and 51 tooth.
Can you advise what

sprocket ratio would best
replicate the original belt
final drive? The bike now has
a 100 cube RevTech engine
and a 6-speed fitted.

Robbo, I turned to Hoody to
answer your question...
“When you run even
number sprockets, the running

environment becomes cyclic,
that is, the same piece of chain
is running over the same parts
of the sprocket at some point. It
may be every second revolution
in a 24/48 combination or a
greater revolution spread in
other even number choices
but running over the same
points will recur. An uneven
number choice behaves like a
