I read with interest the article about
photography and mental health (The
healing power of photography, 4 May).
I saw, at fi rst hand, the benefi cial
effects of photography on my late
wife’s mental health when she
developed a rare form of dementia.
Looking at photos not just of her family
but also old photos of her native city
gave her solace during her illness.
For a time, it was a form of
reminiscence therapy helping her to
recall happier times.
Since she passed away I have been
looking into the role of photography
on dementia sufferers and their carers.
An interesting example in dementia
care is the Museum of Lakeland Life
& Industry in Kendal, Cumbria, where
they are using a collection of photos
from the 1930s to 1960s by local

photographer Joseph Hardman to
work with dementia sufferers and their
families. I also wondered if any camera
clubs/societies are involved in projects
to support dementia sufferers?
Finally I would like to add that my
own interest in photography has
helped me to cope with the pain
of bereavement.

Thanks, John. Your story is just
the latest in a steady stream of
letters on this important topic
since we started covering it in AP.
We’d love to hear more from our
readers who have been using
photography to help dementia
sufferers or people with other
mental health issues – Nigel

To answer your second
question fi rst, I had no
major issues with the
Z 6’s AF performance,
and it put in a sprightly
performance in the
environments I tested it,
including at a racetrack.
I wouldn’t go so far as
saying it’s as fast as the
D850’s focusing system,
which is incredibly
responsive for sport and
action, but unless you’re
photographing British
superbikes or fi ghter
jets week in week out,
you’re unlikely to be

disappointed with the
focusing speed of the
Z 6. As for which camera
is best for you, you’ll
need to ask yourself
a few questions, such

as do you want to make
a resolution jump
to the D850, or are 24
megapixels enough for
you? The Z 6’s back-
illuminated sensor allows
for better light gathering
than the D750’s aging
24MP chip, plus there
are the size and weight
advantages to consider
from switching to
mirrorless too. The Nikon
Z 6 is a phenomenal
camera that does so
much right and very little
wrong. If I were in your
shoes I’d hire a Z 6 for a
few days to try it before
committing to selling the
D600. The £82 you’ll
spend hiring a Z 6 for a
weekend with the FTZ
adapter would be money
well spent if it helps you
to reach a decision –

Street wise
I am going to embark on

  • of people, the way the
city moves, etc. – and it
    begs a question I can’t fi nd
a solid answer to. I read an
    article you guys wrote
    about street photography
and it does clarify a few
points, but I am still unsure
    of the legalities behind
    taking candid photos of
    the public without them
    knowing, to some degree,
that you are there. I won’t
be selling (as of yet, and
    only potentially); I mostly
just want to tell a story and
    may, in the future, take
out one person at a time
    for a kind of workshop.
    What would be your
advice on this? Do I need

Eye on the Z 6
Many thanks for the
comprehensive and
informative review (AP 12
January) and fi eld test (AP
25 May) of the Nikon Z 6.
I am currently considering
replacing my Nikon D
with this camera. May I
ask you if you would think
this a good choice, or
should I consider a
D750 or D850? I am an
enthusiast photographer
but not an expert. I
watched a video test
of the Z 6 on YouTube
that commented on
the diffi culty they had in
getting the autofocus to
work quickly. When you
tested the camera did
