ive years ago, Anil, a
runner boy in a garment
factory in Mohali met up
with an accident that left
his spine paralysed with little hope
for survival. The boy was admitted
to Sohana hospital and his family,
residing in a desolate village of
UP gathered their humble savings
rushed to the city, determined to
give all that it took and save their
son. Months passed, his chances
dwindled and so did the money.
But not the determination. But
determination too needed money to
hold the fort. One man in the higher
ranks in the factory decided not only
to pitch in with his share but also
endeavoured to garner financial help
through crown funding.
Spreading the word in the friends
circle, pulling up contacts for
radio broadcasts in Delhi, putting
up collection boxes at gyms &
eateries of friends, giving a shout on

Facebook. No means was spared.
People came out in big numbers
and help poured in from across
the country. People offered money,
prayers and words of empathy.
Destiny however had different
plans: Anil left the world soon after
and his entire incident, a deep
impact in my heart forever.
People unknown to us had called
every day and offered money for
the treatment. I wondered how they
planted faith in us when they did not
even know us at all. After all, this
could all be one big shame!
Evidently a reflection of a mind
less evolved, my thoughts kept
going back to the people who
did not come forward to help.
These were the people I knew,
acquaintances from different parts
of the country. That hurt, how could
they not help? How could they just
turn a blind eye?
