A

fter a brief respite in which
I found myself wearing
cotton espadrilles in driving
rain, temperatures are set to rise
again. Summer is back on, which
is lovely for those staycationing on

the coast – but I’ve already
run out of hot-weather
clothes to wear, and
creative ways to restyle
my trusty summer
dresses.

Luckily, the same
can never be said
of this summer’s
best-dressed
women.
With more

than a little help from personal
stylists and walk-in wardrobes at
their disposal, you’ll never find
them in a soggy espadrille: here
are the lessons we can learn from
their chicest looks.

Temperatures are rising again – so it’s time for a summer wardrobe tweak, says Charlie Gowans-Eglinton

SHADES OF BEIGE ARE THE
NEW SUMMER WHITES

...BUT BLACK IS
ALWAYS CHIC

THE NEW TROUSER SHAPE
IS A WIDE-LEG CROP

IT NEVER DOES TO FORGET YOUR COAT

  • THIS IS BRITAIN, AFTER ALL

THE FLORAL MIDI
IS STILL A THING

Optic white is too white,
whatever the context: teeth,
wedding dresses, jeans. If you’re
considering the latter, then look
for a more natural off-white
shade in a slightly relaxed cut –
unless you do more squats than
Sisyphus, avoid spray-on
“stretch” styles.
On the high street,
Cos’s cream barrel-leg
jeans (£69, cosstores.
com) tick the shape
and colour boxes.
Margot Robbie (whose
stylist, Kate Young,
is also behind
the wardrobes
of Sienna Miller,
Rachel Weisz and
Dakota Johnson),
currently press-
junketing for her
turn in Quentin
Tarantino’s latest
film, paired straight-
leg ivory jeans with a
buttermilk blouse, both
by cool Californian
label Dôen.
The addition of
buttermilk (a colour
that has until now been
reserved for the walls of
student accommodation) to
our fashion palette marks
a wider shift – first brown
was plucked from the bad
taste abyss to become a chic
neutral, and now shades of
beige and taupe have shed
their drab associations –
case in point, Sienna Miller’s
wheat-coloured trouser
suit (try & Other Stories and
Hobbs for similar).

Trousers are oft overlooked in
summer, but a wide cut and cropped
length give optimum breeze-around-
your-legs-ability, and they solve the
thigh-chafe problem (if you know, you
know). The Duchess of Cambridge
gave the trouser shape her seal of
approval at the Chelsea Flower Show

  • her caramel pair was from Massimo
Dutti. Gap and Boden both have a
good range, or try Monki for more
    casual denim versions.

Of course, pale shades
don’t come without their
risks, and if your day-to-
day involves a bus
journey, I’d steer clear
altogether. Black might be
a bit hotter, but a loose
silhouette balances that
out, and it always
looks fresh: see
Naomi Watts’s
modest frilled dress,
and Bianca Jagger’s
black-upon-black
look, worn to
attend a couture
catwalk show in
Paris last month.
Both women
have chosen to
offset the black
with lighter
accessories, but
the joy of black is
that it goes with
almost every other
shade, so you’re
bound to have
shoes and bag to
suit already.

They may have become
ubiquitous, but the death of
the floral midi dress would
leave a gaping void in
many a wardrobe. Avoid
the worst bit of them –
which is spotting seven
other women in the same
one at the same party –
by shopping off the
beaten track. Lily
and Lionel, Beulah,
D’Ascoli and Rhode
all offer florals a cut
above your everyday
daisies and roses.
Carrie Symonds’s pink
and red floral is a new
season riff on one of
Ghost’s classic shapes

  • the brand may have
    built its name on
    bias-cut silk slip
    dresses in the
    Nineties,
    but it’s the
    wide range
    of floral
    midis that
    make it a
    shopping
    destination
    now – and
    the prints are
    just as varied, if
    you don’t want
    to look as though
    you’re taking style
    tips from the new
    First Girlfriend.
    Once you’ve
    found a best-
    in-show print,
    you can enjoy its
    magical versatility: smarten
it up for work with courts à la
    Carrie and add a top-handle
bag, render it perfect for the
weekend or a spot of sport-spectating
with white trainers and a fedora – see
Lady Helen Taylor at Wimbledon – or
make like Claire Foy and add heeled
sandals and a refined raffia bag, spot
    on for a country wedding.

Party coats are one of my favourite
concessions to the British weather,
because as anyone who’s faced an
8C August day in a silk tea dress
will attest, being cold can really
kill a party (and while visible
nipples aren’t usually mentioned
in dress codes, this look is a
bit much).
Rather than checking your
coat, invest in one that you
can wear in place of a party
dress: Helen Mirren’s is
£1,750 from British brand
Suzannah (suzannah.com) –
steep, but will stand up to
any dress code. The Duchess
of Cambridge, Countess of
Wessex, Princess Beatrice
and Autumn Phillips are all
in the royal fan club – and
they also offer a made-to-
measure service if you’re
planning in advance for a
really special occasion.
Personally, I’d need to
remortgage my house to
afford one of those, and
sadly, as a millennial, I
don’t own one, so I
tracked down a purple
satin style at La Redoute
(£31.60, laredoute.
co.uk) and four
different floral
jacquard options by
Baum und
Pferdgarten, all
currently in the sale
(from £109.50,
baumundpferdgarten.com) in a
range of sizes.
For a more relaxed option,
head to Free People or
Monsoon for a kimono coat
in the same vein as Lisa
Bonet, who wore hers over a
black dress to attend 30-year-old
daughter Zoë Kravitz’s pre-wedding
dinner (I know what you’re thinking:
how can Bonet have a 30-year-old
daughter? Is she Benjamin Buttoning?).
You could also wear yours to smarten
up jeans.

e coast – but I’ve already
