Steep drop for

Sirius as bond

sale fails to find

fertile ground

THE last-minute
cancellation of a $500m
(£411m) bond sale sent
Sirius Minerals shares
down nearly 29pc and threw
its ambitious plans to build a
giant fertiliser mine in
Yorkshire into doubt.
The FTSE 250 company
blamed “current market
conditions” for its decision
to cancel the sale, adding
that it would “revisit the
market” later this quarter.
The miner only has
enough cash to last until
September, although it
could slow down the pace of
construction at its site near
Whitby to keep the lights
on. It is understood that
turmoil in US markets –
where the bond was being
marketed – and a
burgeoning trade war with
China has spooked
investors.
Sirius’s house broker
Liberum suggested the
proposed bond was still
“highly attractive” with a
yield of 13.5pc, adding this
compared favourably with
other recent bond issuances
in the mining sector. They
added around $1.6bn has
already been sunk into the
project: “We would be
surprised if the $1.6bn of
equity invested would be
wholly put at risk because
$500m of senior high-yield
debt couldn’t be delivered.”
Sirius’s sizeable slip was
the biggest drag on the
FTSE 250 during yesterday’s
trading, while Rotork led
mid-cap risers, up 21.6p to

307.5p after it said margins
would progress this year
despite posting a drop in
first half revenue and profit.
The mid-cap index
outperformed the FTSE
100 , which has closed down
every day bar Thursday
since last Monday despite
the pound’s decline, falling
nearly 7pc in that time.
The blue-chip index
closed down 51.16 at 7,179.69.
With energy, utilities and
materials firms weighing
most heavily amid
continued global pressures.
Movements were set
against a backdrop of global
doubts, as the aftermath of
Monday’s rout weighed on
markets. Positivity initially
won through, but sentiment
turned in the afternoon to
leave stock indices down
across Asia and Europe.
Among movers on the
FTSE 100, JD Sports rose
6.8p to 588p. RBC analysts
said on Monday they expect
the retailer “to continue to
benefit from being a
preferred partner of Nike
and adidas” despite the
tough retail environment.
Just Eat closed up 8.2p at
739.4p, finally feeling the
bounce it missed amid
Monday’s market chaos
after full details of its tie-up
with Dutch rival Takeaway.
com were revealed.
The biggest climber
across the All-Share was
SDL, with the language
translation firm rising
10.66p to 488p after saying it
was confident in its
performance for the rest of
the year. Numis analysts
said: “The group enters the
traditionally stronger
second half with good sales
momentum and a healthy
sales pipeline.”

Investment

market lifts LV=
Insurer LV= has posted a
jump in like-for-like
pre-tax profits for the six
months to the end of June
thanks to improving
investment markets. The
firm, which was founded in
1843 as a way for
Liverpool’s poor to save for
their funerals, also saw a
fall in sales for its life and
pensions business, after
facing “tough trading
conditions” in 2019. Sales
at the division fell by
26.8pc to £710m, from
£970m in the same period
last year.

IWG boss hopeful

about rival’s float
The boss of Regus owner
IWG said he was looking
forward to the much-
anticipated flotation of rival
landlord WeWork as it will
“level the playing field”
between the two companies.
Mark Dixon said IWG was
the market leader and that
once WeWork was exposed
to the scrutiny that comes
with being a listed firm, “the
tide will go out and you’ll
see what’s actually there”.
WeWork has filed to go
public with a valuation of
more than $47bn (£39bn).

Meggitt raises

annual guidance
UK defence contractor
Meggitt said it is on track
to deliver margin
improvement of 0 to 50
basis points in 2019, while
upgrading its revenue
outlook for the full year.
The engineer posted a 31pc
fall in first-half profits due
to fewer disposals while
revenue jumped 12pc to
£1.07bn. Tony Wood, chief
executive, said results were
“strong” despite “lower
demand for initial
provisioning spares
following the grounding of
the 737 MAX.

Barneys New York

on the brink
Barneys New York plans to
close most of its stores and
faces collapse if the
upmarket department store
chain fails to find a new
owner. The retailer filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy
yesterday and put itself up
for sale after securing a
$75m (£61m) cash injection
from Hilco Global and
Gordon Brothers to stay
afloat. It said it would shut
three of its 13 department
stores in Chicago, Las Vegas
and Seattle along with five
smaller “concept” stores and
seven warehouses.
