Triumph of UK’s

rarest seabirds

For the first time in 29 years, four of
the UK’s rarest nesting seabirds have
hatched and fledged on the Skerries,
off Anglesey.
The roseate tern chicks arrived in
late June, with two pairs having two
hungry beaks to feed but all four
healthy birds have now successfully
fledged as elegant seabirds.
With long tails, and beautiful pale
feathers – the slight rosy flush of
which gives them their name, these
endangered birds are affectionately
called “rosies”.
The birds fly each spring from
western Africa to nest at just a handful
of coastal spots in the UK and Ireland,
and thanks to RSPB staff who look
after the areas where they nest, have
this year bred in record numbers.
Work includes keeping the larger
gulls at bay and making sure invasive
mammals such as rats have not found
their way into the colonies.
