in a three-bedroom house in the
sleepy village of Doorwerth, just
outside Arnhem.
When his father and mother
were not visiting, Mount cooked
for himself, washed his own
clothes and picked up enough
Dutch to get by. But at the end of
his first season playing first-team
football, Mount wanted to push
himself once more with a loan to
the Championship and, again, he
made a quick impression.
Derby were on course to lose
Lampard’s first game as a manager,
last August, until the ball broke to
Mount 20 yards out, and his
left-foot shot squeezed past
Reading goalkeeper Vito Mannone.
That set the tone for Mount’s
season, in which he won a senior
England call-up in October and
finished with 11 goals and helped
Derby reach the Championship
play-off final at Wembley, which
they lost to Aston Villa.

aged five, Mount

WHAT THEY SAY
“Every challenge
he’s had he’s met.
For me that’s a sign
that a player is going
to go places. Every
time a question is
asked of him, he

Cole, former Chelsea

this year was that the logical next
step for Mount would be to go on
loan to a Premier League club this
season to get top-flight experience.
But after succeeding Sarri,
Lampard quickly told Mount he
would not be leaving on loan and
would instead be part of his squad.
The club further underlined their
faith in him by handing him a
five-year contract worth around
£77,000 a week.
Yet again, Mount has not hung
around in showing what he is
capable of in pre-season. He
scored on his first senior
appearance in the friendly
against St Patrick’s and
netted two more against
Reading.
“I’ll be really proud
when he plays for
Chelsea in the Premier League,”
said Winzar. “But it’s what Mason
and his family have done, really.
Tony has been fantastic. Mason
will be a superstar.”

Laurent Koscielny has joined Bor-
deaux after Arsenal agreed to sell
him for around £4.6 million.
Koscielny has been desperate to
return to France this summer and
refused to go on Arsenal’s pre-sea-
son tour of the United States in an
attempt to force a move.
The defender had hoped that
Arsenal would allow him to leave
for free, despite having one year
left on his contract, but the club
were adamant that they would only
let him go if they received a fee.
In a statement, Arsenal said: “We
decided to sanction his move to
Bordeaux once we agreed accepta-
ble transfer terms.” Unai Emery, the
head coach, had tried to convince
Koscielny to stay. The defender
turns 34 next month but the coach-
ing staff believed he could still be a
crucial player this season before the
arrival of teenage centre-back Wil-
liam Saliba, who signed this sum-
mer from St-Etienne but has been
loaned back to the French club for
the 2019-20 campaign.

Manchester City have signed
another of the most highly rated
teenagers in the country, agreeing
compensation with Aston Villa for
their academy midfielder Kane Tay-
lor, who was pursued by many of
the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
The 14-year-old had deregistered
at Villa last season, meaning he was
available for £129,000 compensa-
tion under the Elite Player Perfor-
mance Plan tariffs, prompting a
stampede of the Premier League’s
elite. Liverpool were keen on Tay-
lor and there were also representa-
tions made on behalf of Manchester
United, Chelsea and Arsenal.
winning sides under Arsene
Wenger, making 353 appearances
in total. Arsenal are continuing to
pursue another centre-back before
the transfer deadline tomorrow.
There is interest in Juventus de-
fender Daniele Rugani, but it is un-
derstood that the financial figures
being quoted by the Italian club are
out of Arsenal’s reach.
Reports in Italy have said that Ju-
ventus want £50 million for the
25-year-old, who has made seven
appearances for Italy. Arsenal also
rate Red Bull Leipzig defender
Dayot Upamecano, but the German
side are reportedly holding out for a
fee of around £70 million for the
20-year-old.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are in talks
with Nottingham Forest over the
departure of Carl Jenkinson. The
right-back made just three appear-
ances in the Premier League last
season and is not part of Emery’s
first-team plans.
Arsenal will allow striker Eddie
Nketiah to leave on loan, with
Championship clubs Bristol City
and Leeds United both understood
to be interested in the 20-year-old,
who impressed on Arsenal’s pre-
season tour.
Taylor is a left-footed midfielder
who will go into City’s Under-16s
squad next season.
The club have pursued a policy
of recruiting some of the leading
English talents in that age group
for the past two years. Last season
they signed Darko Gyabi, a
2004-born midfielder originally at
Millwall, and also the 14-year-old
Bolton Wanderers academy striker
Daniel Ogwuru.
City’s academy programme is
starting to reap dividends. As well
as the first-team development of
Phil Foden, players recruited from
rival clubs who have been devel-
oped and then sold have become a
useful source of Financial Fair
Play-approved income.

FA will stream 150 women’s
games online in new season
The Football Association will
launch a streaming platform for
women’s football this season.
The FA Player will provide live
access to more than 150 domestic
games, including all Women’s^
Super League matches and a fixture
from each round of the Champion-
ship.
The platform, which will be free
online and via an app, will have
selected England, FA Cup and Con-
tinental League Cup highlights plus
archive footage and features.
BT Sport and the BBC will also
continue their regular coverage,
with more than 30 live games
televised across the new season.
Kelly Simmons, the FA’s director
of the women’s professional game,
said: “This is a significant step in
the journey to grow the women’s
game and attract new audiences.
“We know people want to watch
football in different ways, with
content quickly and easily accessi-
ble.”
The platform will launch ahead
of the WSL season, which starts on
Sept 7 when Manchester City face
Manchester United at the Etihad
Stadium.
