spade honours on the table, plays his ♠A. Which

card do you play and why?

you play the ♠6, not ♠3. In this particular instance,

it is possible that declarer is missing the ♠K, but

is still going ahead with drawing trumps as quickly

as he can, because he has recognised your lead as

a singleton.

At any rate, it can do no harm to tell your partner

that you have three trumps, so that, if he does win

the second round of the suit, he will know that it is

not too late to give you a ruff.

This is another instance when the normal petering

to show two or four gives way to a special signal,

the message of which is that, not only have you

got three trumps, but you also have an interest in

getting a ruff.

Don’t use it if you’ve nothing to ruff anyway:

keep it to pass the twofold message — I have a

third trump, and something I can do with it!
