Sirius digs itself a hole as
it halts £410m bond deal
A FORMER cult stock took a
nosedive as Sirius Minerals
lost a quarter of its value in one
brutal session.
It was forced to delay a £410m
bond issue, citing turbulent mar-
ket conditions.
For hundreds if not thousands of
private investors with stakes in
the firm, many of whom live close
to its fertiliser project in North
Yorkshire, it was a grim day.
In fact, 2019 has been a grim
year, with the value of the com-
pany cut in half since January.
While boss Chris Fraser and his
team appear to be making good
progress with the Woodsmith
Mine, near Scarborough, finan-
cially they are up against it.
The delayed fundraiser is meant
to fill up the company’s coffers
and unlock a £2bn overdraft.
Together, this should be enough
to finish the work and get Wood-
smith into production by 2021.
By kicking out the bond issue to
next month, Sirius is cutting
things a little fine, according to
Richard Knights, an analyst at
City firm Liberum. He said that
cash reserves are expected to last
until the end of September,
although this could probably be
pushed back a little if it takes
longer to agree a fundraising.
Against such an uncertain back-
drop, he remains optimistic about
Sirius’s prospects and is expect-
ing it to hit 40p a share. The stock
fell 28.8pc, or 4.2p, to 10.4p.
The FTSE 100 waxed and waned
over the session to close down
52.16 points at 7171.69.
Sticking with the mining sector,
Glencore, which American bank
Jefferies continued to rate a ‘sell’,
fell 1.6pc, or 3.65p, to 231.35p.
Barclays Capital, meanwhile, took
aim at iron ore group Ferrexpo,
which fell 1.4pc, or 3.2p, to 230.8p,
downgrading it to ‘equal-weight’.
Intercontinental Hotels Group
was under pressure after its
interims appeared to show US
and Chinese growth had slowed.
The shares fell 2pc, or 108p, to
5181p. Swiss bank UBS repeated
its ‘sell’ recommendation and its
4700p price target.
Dedicated followers of fashion in
the Square Mile appeared to be
split over the prospects for Bur­
berry, down 0.1pc, or 3p, at 2160p.
American house Bernstein cut
its recommendation to ‘underper-
form’ along with its price target,
which moved down to 1780p from
1850p. Goldman Sachs, by con-
trast, raised its valuation 50p to
1950p, though it remained ‘neu-
tral’ on the luxury brand.
In the cosmetics section, it was a
horrible day for all involved with
Warpaint London, with the value
of the business dropping 25.5pc,
or 20p per share, to 58.5p after it
sounded the earnings alarm.
The owner of the W7 and Technic
make-up brands now expects
profits of between £6m and £7m
on sales of roughly £50m for the
calendar year.
Half-year results from Rotork
and Meggitt got the thumbs-up,
giving the FTSE 250 a fillip in the
process. Order intake in the sec-
ond quarter at valves specialist
Rotork improved, and it rose
7.6pc, or 21.6p, to 307.5p.
Meggitt, another engineering
company that does not seem to
have got the memo about Britain
being purely a service economy,
climbed 3pc, or 17p, to 588.2p
after it upgraded its revenue
growth outlook.
Among the small-caps, it was
another difficult day for Valirx,
the minnow drug developer. It fell
11.1pc, or 0.02p, to 0.16p after it
said a proposed joint venture
hadn’t moved on at the pace it
anticipated. It is also still waiting
for a tax credit worth £400,000 –
significant for a business valued
at just £1.6m.
THE challenges for oil firm
Genel Energy are two-fold.
Not only is the barren land-
scape in which it operates
blisteringly hot and inhospita-
ble, but the Kurdistan region
of Iraq is politically volatile and
close to a former war zone.
However, it did average daily
production of 37,400 barrels
in the first half of 2019, which
should rise to just short of
40,000 by the year end.
It has also wiped out its debts
and built a £46m war chest.
Shares rose by 0.5pc, or 0.8p,
to 178.8p.
