law snares

700 in a year

MORE than 700 men were
fined in the first year of the
so-called “cat call” law in
France, official figures
revealed yesterday.
French authorities are
trying to clamp down on
wolf-whistling, lewd
comments and
inappropriate gestures to
protect women from
sexual harassment.
Offenders face fines of
up to €1,500 (£1,378).
Gender equality minister
Marlene Schiappa tweeted:
“It is no longer permissible
and must no longer be
tolerated to insult, to
follow, to humiliate women
by harassing them in the
street, on transport or in a
public space.”

By Michael Knowles
assisted by the local Orang
Asli people, who have
knowledge of the dense
jungle terrain.
Even more personnel are
expected to join the 160
people already taking part
in the operation.
Police have also brought
in a specialist dog unit to
help with the search.
State deputy police chief
Che Zakaria Othman said:
“We’ve got a platoon from
the general operations
force as well as a police
canine team to look for
Nora.”
He also said police had
expanded the operation
beyond the initial seven-
mile radius.
Nora, who has special
needs, vanished in
Malaysia on a family “trip

of a lifetime”. Her
distraught parents Meabh
and Seb, who live in
London, woke on Sunday
to find her missing from
her bedroom at the Dusun
resort, 40 miles south of
the capital Kuala Lumpur.
Her family in the UK
issued another statement
yesterday, echoing her
parents’ fears, saying:
“Nora’s family believe she
has been abducted.

“We are especially
worried because Nora has
learning and
developmental disabilities,
and is not like other
15-year-olds.
“She looks younger, she
is not capable of taking
care of herself, and she
won’t understand what is

going on. She never goes
anywhere by herself.
“We have no reason to
believe she wandered off
and is lost.
“Nora has shoulder-
length wavy dark blonde
hair and blue eyes. She is
5ft 1in and thin.
“If you have any
information, please pass it
on so we can assist the
local police in any way
possible.”
Police said Nora’s
passport and other
belongings were still in her
family’s possession, but
the CCTV system at the
resort only covered a
limited area.
The Dusun resort is a
12-acre complex in the
foothills of the Titiwangsa
mountains, and sits next to
the 4,000-acre Berembun
Forest Reserve.
