A

FTERNOON Tea Week 2019
starts next Monday and one
person who would surely
have approved of the
opportunity to take tea in
elegant surroundings is style
icon, photographer and interior
designer Anthony Denney.
The 1950s and 1960s British Vogue
and Condé Nast photographer
revolutionised fashion photography
with his use of lighting and carefully
placed objects in living room settings
and is the subject of a two-year
exhibition at the National Trust’s
Rainham Hall in the London borough
of Havering (nationaltrust.org.uk).
Denney was often asked for
interiors advice by newspapers and
magazines and warned against
clutter. He said: “Instead of several
gadgets or ornaments buy one good
piece that you would be proud to leave
to your children.”
As an innovative food photographer
he took pictures for Mediterranean
cookery expert Elizabeth David using
domestic settings for her recipes that,
again, would look fashionable today but
back in the 1950s and 1960s were
positively groundbreaking.
Elizabeth David’s 1960 recipe for
flourless chocolate cake would be
perfect for Afternoon Tea Week.
So clear away your clutter, invest in a
few key pieces of furniture and art or
objects, as Denney would have called
them, and celebrate a British tradition
that stretches back 180 years.
