DAN EVANS is
relishing the chance to
go head-to-head with
Rafa Nadal for the first
time tonight.
Evans beat Alex
de Minaur 6-4, 7-6 to
set up the second-
round clash in the
Rogers Cup.
The British No 2
missed out on a
meeting with Nadal at
Wimbledon last month
but now has the chance
to face the 18-time
Grand Slam winner in

Montreal. Evans said:
“It’s going to be great.
He is one of the best
players to ever walk on
the court and I’m going
to enjoy every minute
of it. It’s a shame it
didn’t happen at
Wimbledon, but there’s
no better place to do it
than here.”
Spaniard Nadal, who
is the top seed and
defending champion,
received a first-round
bye.

was dropped from the World Cup
starting XI halfway through the
tournament, appeared to desert him at
Edgbaston.
“We have seen him go through
one or two periods like this
but we know he is a good
player.” said Bayliss. “It
can be one innings, one
good spell of bowling
that can get him back
on track. Everyone’s a
confidence player but I
think with Mo it is very
much like that.
“If he puts together
one good spell we know
he can pick up three or four
very quickly. He’s got to try not to
put too much pressure on himself and
go out and enjoy it.
“But I’m sure Leach will be in the
frame for Lord’s. He was very close to
this one, we got him up for the practice
days. I’m sure he will be
discussed.”
Bayliss refused to criticise
Jason Roy, who was out
dancing down the wicket
trying to hit Nathan Lyon
over his head when
England needed to bat out
the day.
“I thought he was trying
throughout both innings to
knuckle down and play
in a Test match
mode. But if he
gets out like he
did he has to
take it on the
chin and
we’ve got to.

in the next game.”
Bairstow responded to criticism
about his form with back-to-back
group stage centuries in the World Cup
and Bayliss was hopeful questions
about his contribution at
Edgbaston will have the
same effect.
“Am I concerned? I
wouldn’t have thought
so. He has a bit [of
credit] in the bank,
Jonny. Like a few
other guys, when you
lose a game you’re
always disappointed. But
he usually finds a way to
motivate himself.
“When he has a point to prove
that’s usually when he’s at the top of
his game. I’m sure he’s disappointed to
miss out here and I’m sure he’ll be
approaching the next game with a
point to prove.”

TREVOR BAYLISS has dismissed
suggestions England’s players are
suffering a World Cup hangover but
said they may bring in new faces in
the second Test at Lord’s next week.
England are licking their wounds
after suffering a crushing 251-run
defeat at Edgbaston in the opening
match of the Ashes series.
And in addition to Jimmy Anderson

Jofra Archer will blow a bit of
positivity back into a deflated dressing
room at Lord’s after coming through a
    fitness test yesterday.
But Moeen will have to face down
    stiff competition from left-arm spinner
Jack Leach and both Bairstow and
Buttler will need to improve if
pressure from Ben Foakes is not to
    build.
Bairstow got a pair at Lord’s against
Ireland and looked some way off his
best with the bat at Edgbaston where
he posted eight and six in two innings.
Buttler, who made five and one at
Edgbaston, said the World Cup put
    him through an emotional wringer.
    Bayliss, right, insisted he was
    confident his players have got
    over their white-ball heroics
    even though the England
    coach admitted that
    it had been a
    worry ahead of
    the Test against
    Ireland.
    “The intensity
    we approached
    everything with
    in this match
    didn’t give any
    indication of
    that at all,”
    he said.
