against Gloucestershire with
flying colours.
And while yesterday was a
world away from facing
Australia, England are set to
throw the 24-year-old straight
in for his debut.
The fact Archer came through,
without a flare-up of the side
strain which troubled him
through the World Cup, was
timely with Jimmy Anderson
ruled out with a calf injury.
Coach Trevor Bayliss
admitted it is a
straight
shoot-out
between
Archer and
Olly Stone,
right, for
Lord’s.
“We’ve been
waiting for some guys with a bit
more pace and in Jofra and Olly
Stone we have two guys who are
very close to selection,” said
Bayliss. “It is something exciting
that we’ve been waiting for – for
those guys to get up to speed
and I don’t think we are too far
away from that.
“We know the quality Jofra’s
got but we’ve also got Olly Stone
in the squad, who I thought was
impressive against Ireland. Both
of those guys will be discussed
going into the next match.”
Anderson was ruled out after
an MRI scan confirmed the injury
to his right calf, a similar issue
to the one he suffered playing
for Lancashire in early July
which ruled him out for four
weeks. It makes him a doubt
for the remainder of the series.

walls of the dressing room.
The guys who haven’t
played in an Ashes before
will have noticed the extra
level of scrutiny and
expectation.
“When it is at home, the support
is great but if you don’t play well
you are going to get even more
criticism.”
But Strauss fears for the
Test future of Mooen
Ali, who took just three
wickets and scored
only four runs.
He said: “I worry
about Mo. It’s a lonely
place when things are
not going your way.
“Is he better off
now out of the firing
line? These are the
decisions for the
selectors – we can’t
afford to be carrying any
passengers.”

manner of their collapse, though,
has led to skipper Joe Root, right,
being criticised for his decision-
making after they were all out for
146 on a disastrous final day.
But Strauss believes Root can
handle the flak.
“Joe is an experienced Test
cricketer now, he has been
there and seen it,” said
Strauss, speaking at the
launch of golf coach
David Leadbetter’s
new online teaching
platform.
“As captain it is
harder but those are
the tests you need to
overcome. He is a quality
individual and I am sure he
will come through.
“As an England captain you just
have to remain level.
“You need to look at what the
team did well but you can’t blindly
turn your back on things and say
there is nothing wrong. England did
some things wrong at Edgbaston,
no doubt about it. But concentrate
on what is going on in the four

ANDREW STRAUSS is sure
England will come out all guns
blazing at Lord’s next week after
their disastrous Ashes start.
England go into the second Test a
week today having suffered the
humiliation of a 251-run mauling
by Australia at Edgbaston.
Strauss, 42, who masterminded a
home Ashes win in 2009, admits
the opening loss to their
arch-rivals is a hammer
blow to their hopes of
winning them back.
But he expects
England to fight back
strongly and says the
Aussies have their
vulnerabilities.
“England will dig
deep and come out all
guns blazing at Lord’s,” said
Strauss, above, who led the side
from 2006-2012.
“The question is what sort of
momentum and psychological
advantage do Australia have now?
“I don’t think they do though. I
still think there are a lot of
vulnerabilities in that Australian
camp. But England will know they
can’t afford to go 2-0 down.” The
