Axed Te’o and

preparation phase where the
development of the team tactically is
paramount.
“By the time we fly out on
September 8th we will be ready to win
the World Cup. We are not there yet
but we have four games to get ready.”
The jettisoning of Te’o and Brown
follows a theme with a gaggle of
thirtysomethings in Dylan
Hartley, Chris Robshaw and
Danny Care axed.
Stripping away so many
caps so close to a
tournament is unusual, but
Jones clearly thinks he has
superior options – some of
them with no Test experience.
While the armchair selectors
have been calling for the inclusion of
Danny Cipriani to no avail, Jones has
picked another Gloucester player –
Willi Heinz – instead.
Heinz, who at 32 will at least
rebalance the age scales in the squad,
has leapfrogged Spencer in the scrum-
half pecking order and is set to make
his debut at Twickenham on Sunday.
The converted Kiwi is one of five
uncapped players involved for the first
of two matches in the space of six days
against Wales – along with Marchant,
Northampton flanker Lewis Ludlam,
Saracens hooker Jack Singleton and
Bath wing Ruaridh McConnochie, who
converted from sevens last season.

BEN TE’O is set to become England’s
most significant World Cup fall guy
following his exclusion from the squad
to face Wales on Sunday.
Te’o, who was a Test Lion against the
All Blacks two years ago, was omitted
from the 33-man party which met up
yesterday at Pennyhill Park to prepare
for the first of four World Cup
warm-up fixtures.
The powerful centre has been a
constant in Eddie Jones’ squads when
fit since he made his debut in 2016.
He was used alongside Manu Tuilagi
against Italy in a blockbusting midfield
in this season’s Six Nations but the
Leicester centre’s return has persuaded
the Australian to cast his eye elsewhere
in the search for midfield balance.
Uncapped Harlequin Joe
Marchant and centre Piers
Francis of Northampton
were named ahead of the
32-year-old, who is
currently unattached after
leaving Worcester.
Mike Brown, right, was
the other high-profile player
axed following the fitness camp
in Treviso alongside Harlequins club
mate Alex Dombrandt and Saracens
scrum-half Ben Spencer.
If there was one squad – apart from
the actual World Cup 31 – a player
would be desperate not to miss out on
it was yesterday’s given its proximity
to the final cut.
Jones will name his squad for the
World Cup in Japan on Monday.
“Players excluded are naturally
disappointed but may get another
opportunity so must be
ready,” said Jones.
“We’ve worked
hard and now move
into a four-game

his second gold of London
2012 and his sixth
Olympic gold medal. There
were also golds for
Alistair Brownlee (men’s
triathlon), Laura
Bechtolsheimer, Charlotte
Dujardin and Carl Hester
(team dressage) and
Laura Trott (women’s
omnium), while Victoria
Pendleton was a silver
medallist in the women’s
sprint.

2004: Irish distance
runner Cathal Lombard
tested positive for banned
drug EPO.
2011: Manchester United
beat Manchester City 3-2
after trailing 2-0 at
half-time to win the
Community Shield at
Wembley.
2012: On a bumper day for
Great Britain’s Olympians,
Chris Hoy won the gold
medal in the men’s keirin,

THOSE WERE

THE DAYS

1711: Queen Anne attended
Ascot races, thereby
lending the prefix ‘Royal’
to the meeting.
1926: The first British
Grand Prix was staged at
Brooklands. Known as the
RAC Grand Prix, the race
was won by Senechal and
Wagner, driving their
Delage at an average
speed of 71.61 miles per
hour.
1999: Newcastle striker
Alan Shearer was sent off
for the first time in his
career as Aston Villa won
1-0 at St James’ Park.
Shearer was dismissed for
a 71st-minute challenge
on Ian Taylor.
