Injection proved effective

‘Fatbuster’ jab helps diabetic

patients burn 10lb in 4 weeks

AN ANTI-OBESITY jab developed by
British scientists has seen diabetics
shed nearly 10lb in a month.
The injection contains a cocktail of
hormones that burns off fat more
effectively than a gastric by-pass op,
with no side-effects.
The patients’ blood glucose returned
to near-normal levels within four
weeks and they lost an average of
9.7lb (4.4kg).
That was nearly twice as much as a
control group given a saline solution,
who lost an average 5.5lb (2.5kg).
One of the 15 participants in the
trial, who were of both sexes and aged
18 to 70, shed 11.7lb (5.3kg).
An injection or pill is the “holy
grail” in the fight against the obesity
epidemic, which has seen almost a
third of the world’s population grow to
be obese or overweight.
The UK is one of the worst affected

countries, with one in four adults now
considered to be obese.
Lead author Professor Tricia Tan, of
Imperial College London, said:
“Obesity and Type 2 diabetes can lead
to very serious and potentially life-
threatening conditions such as cancer,
stroke and heart disease.
“There is a real need to find new
medicines so we can improve and save
the lives of many patients.”
The groundbreaking method mimics
having a gastric band fitted. Although

the common operation is often suc-
cessful it can cause complications like
abdominal pain, chronic nausea, vom-
iting and debilitating low blood sugar.
Previous studies suggest one of the
reasons the surgery works is because
three hormones originating from the
bowels are released in higher levels.
This chemical combination, known
to doctors as “GOP” for short, reduces
appetite, causes weight loss and
improves the body’s ability to use the
sugar absorbed from eating. In the

latest study the patients were given the
GOP treatment for four weeks using a
pump that slowly injects the mixture.
Prof Tan said: “Although this is a
small study our new combination hor-
mone treatment is promising and
showed significant improvements in
patients’ health.”
The research was funded by the UK
Medical Research Council and the
NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research
Centre. The results were published in
Diabetes Care.

AS the Queen moved in to
Balmoral Castle for the rest of
the summer yesterday she was
reacquainted with the Army’s
most disorderly corporal – a
Shetland pony who tried to eat
her flowers two years ago.
Corporal Cruachan IV, mascot
of the Royal Regiment of
Scotland, was on parade at
the castle to welcome the
93-year-old monarch as she
took up residence at her
Highland getaway.
“Back again,” the smiling
Queen said, as his handler told
her he had been exhibited at the
Turriff Show in Aberdeenshire
earlier this week. “Oh he was
actually shown, was he?” she
remarked in surprise.

The 10-year-old pony may
have been on his best behaviour
yesterday, but last year he
disgraced himself by pooing on
parade when the Queen arrived.
In 2017 Her Majesty told him
to “go away” as he tried to eat
her posy during a visit to
Stirling Castle. “They always try
to eat the flowers,” she said.
And in February last year he
also tried to nip Prince Harry as
he stroked him while visiting
Edinburgh with his wife-to-be.
The Queen is due to remain in
residence at Balmoral until
October and will be joined by
Prince Philip on Monday.
