20 British Patchwork & Quilting JULY 2019

Spring has arrived when I make my way to the Three Counties Showground in May for
Quilts UK. One of the larger of the regular quilt shows it always provides a feast for the
eyes. The Malvern Hills in the background, as I drove into the car park, were glowing with
a purple tinge in the fabulous sunshine and the trees were bursting into leaf.

It seemed appropriate then that the
Quilts UK Overall Champion was
exactly that. ‘Saknad’ was an image
of a Swedish woodland. Malin Wood
(appropriate name too!) created this
beautifully refl ective piece. Her fi rst
attempt at disappearing perspective,
her trees were dyed, painted and
appliquéd with intricate quilting using
diff erent domestic machine stitches.
She also included a line from a poem
in Swedish, ‘I yearn for the soil, I yearn
for the stones Where I played as a child.’ Malin was also awarded
fi rst in the Large Wall Hanging category, the Art Quilt Award, the
Intermediate Quilter Award and was Maggie Davies’ Judge's Choice.

Another scenic quilt, but one in complete contrast, not only in
content but in size, was the Quilts UK Overall Runner Up. ‘Greek
Village Sampler’ by Julia Gahagan was a take on a sampler quilt and
this won the Miniature/Doll Quilts fi rst place. The tiny white houses
perched on hillsides, each in their own block with embroidered
details and quilting enhancing the design.
