version. The Quilt Room Award for Piecing was
won by the stunning ‘Sunburst’ by Carol Allen,
another quilted by Frances Meredith from
Fabadashery. Fussy cut, English Paper Piecing
sunbursts were hand appliquéd onto the
background. The South West Quilters’ Trophy for
Traditional Patchwork was won by Rebecca Collins
with her ‘Pinya Hardin’ (Pineapple Garden) which
was quilted by Ferret. Finally the Wholecloth Quilt
Award went to Greta Fitchett for her quilt ‘The
Long Cold Winter’. A Disappearing Nine Patch
block with white on white fabrics, quilted with
traditional Welsh designs, hand and machined,
and enlivened by a ‘scattering of sparkling beads’
makes this quilt simply stunning but not easy
to photograph!

The fi nal categories that I can tell you about are the Under 16s,
which was won by Holly Goacher for her ‘Half-Square Havoc’,
second place being won by Hannah Thompson for ‘Loves
Me, Loves Me Not’ and third going to Amy Goacher for ‘In the
Rainforest’. The group quilts was won by Ex-DC Quilters for a
very clever rendering of ‘Amsterdam Houses’. Designed and
longarm quilted by Janet Lindsay each panel was worked on by
a diff erent member. Ladies in Stitches came second with their
piece ‘Mere Men’ and third place was awarded to ‘Everyone
Is a Winner’ by Wirral Peninsula Quilters’ with Dresden Plate
rosettes. The winner of the May Clarke Memorial Cup for the
Best Charity Quilt was won by Lydney Quilters’ with ‘Dresden
Plate’, longarm quilted by Frances Meredith. In aid of the
Lydney Hospital and the Victoria Centre. Second place went to
‘Group Eff ort’ by Essex and Suff olk Quilters’, long arm quilted
by Jean Wife. It is to be raffl ed at their show in October. Third
place went to Sian Nunn and Alison Baldwin for their ‘Noah’s
Ark Hunters’ Star Quilt’ made to raise funds for the Noah’s Ark
Children's’ Hospice.

I always fi nd it diffi cult writing these show reviews as I have
limited space and cannot show, or even mention all the winning
quilts but ‘California Dreaming’ by Kathleen Danswan was
picked by Sylvia Critcher for her Judge's Choice. ‘Byzantium’
by Liz Jones, chosen by Pat Salt as her Judge’s Choice, was one
that needed close inspection to see the wonderful embroidery
on felt. Lastly I’ll mention ‘I Saw Five Boats’ by Catherine Gilbert
and members of the Wye Knots. A bright cheerful group quilt
that was awarded a Judge's Merit and this summed up the
show - ‘Bright and cheerful’ and already in the diary for next
year, the theme of which is ‘Borders’.

The dates for next year's show are 14 – 17 May, 2020.
