BLOCK 7 – FLYING GEESE STAR
Louisa used three of her floral prints:
one dark toned, one medium toned and
one from which she fussy cut her centre
square. In this block we make the block
units using basic foundation piecing to
ensure sharp points for the star.

CUTTING

  1. From dark floral cut:
six, 3¼" squares. Cut squares in
half along diagonal to make twelve
    triangles.

d. Alternately, use your regular cutting
ruler to trim excess fabric leaving ¼"
seam allowance.
3a. Turn square over so fabric is
uppermost, unfolding paper pattern and
place one, 3¼" cream triangle right sides
together with square along cut edge,
illust. 1d.
b. Pin or hold pieces in position, turn
square over so pattern is uppermost
and using shorter stitch length than
usual and starting and ending a few
stitches beyond ends of line, stitch along
diagonal line, illust. 1e.
c. Turn pattern over and lightly press
triangle open, illust. 1f.

  1. Repeat to add cream triangles to each
    corner.
5a. Place pattern right side down and
trim unit adding ¼" seam allowance on
    each side.
    b. Unit should measure 4½" square,
    illust. 2.
6a. Follow similar method to make four
Template B with 4¾" cream squares and
    3¼" medium floral triangles.
    b. Trim units so they measure 4½" square.
    7a. Place one, 2¾" x 4¾" cream rectangle
right side down on work surface. Lay
one Template C drawn side up on top,
    illust. 3a.

  2. From medium floral cut:
four, 3¼" squares. Cut squares in
half along diagonal to make eight
    triangles.

  3. From dark blue floral fussy cut:
    one, 4¾" square.

  4. From cream cut:
one, 4¾" x WOF strip sub cut into:
    eight, 2¾" x 4¾" rectangles,
    four, 4¾" squares,
two, 3¼" squares. Cut squares in
half along diagonal to make four
    triangles.
