YOKO SAITO THROUGH THE YEARS

Yoko Saito takes us through her life in quilting, her central themes are colour

and patterns created with appliqué and embroidery. Her fi rst work was

inspired by antique American quilts e.g. the Rail Fence of 1978 but gradually

she developed her own palette, the now famous taupes. A visit to Sweden

led her to use soft blues and greys.

The earlier works have machine piecing but are always hand quilted.

The detailed photos show the exquisite appliqué and embroidery.

Later she turned her attention to designing bags. The bags are also

perfect examples of her skilful hand stitching.

As a great admirer of her work I choose this as my Book of the Month.

CIVIL WAR LEGACIES IV

Another in the series of quilts linked to the mid-nineteenth century American

Civil War, made in the soft shaded fabrics of that time. The quilts are often

named after events and battles.

The quilts are all pieced, there is no appliqué. They are adapted traditional

blocks e.g. Pinwheel, Flying Geese and Baskets arranged in rows, on point or

in strips. The blocks are simple, explained clearly

with written instructions and diagrams.

The smallest quilt is a 24" square wall-hanging,

the largest is 46" x 47". There are quilting

suggestions but the fi nishing directions are on

the Martingale website.
