QUILTS SOMEWHAT IN THE MIDDLE
SUSAN SMITH © 2019

A French/English book of sixteen quilts with both Imperial
and Metric measurements. Apart from a few small quilts,
they are all bed quilts, varying from a simple scrap quilt of 5"
squares to quilts with many blocks within blocks.
Hand sewn appliqué features on many quilts. A medallion
quilt crib quilt has circling birds and fl owers. The detailed
photos show impressive quilting but there are no quilting
ideas given. The pull-out sheets have templates and
placement diagrams.
There is a lot of hand stitching on these ‘busy’ quilts. They
would require a great deal of time and patience to complete.

STACK AND CUT
SARA NEPHEW AND MARCI BAKER © 2018

At its simplest, large high contrast prints, with repeat patterns,
cut into 60° wedge triangles sewn together can create diff erent
hexagons. These techniques however, make pieced wedges into
hexagons plus joining triangles, diamonds and other shapes.

The principal aim is to teach thirty two diff erently pieced hexagons,
mostly 16½" x 19" in diagrams and words. There is advice for
choosing and cutting suitable fabric. The fi nal section includes
actual size templates.

The sampler runner is a good way to learn the methods.
There are many examples of completed quilts with pieced borders.

SMALL WONDERS
SERENA BOFFA SODA © 2018

A charming collection of four small items combining English
piecing over paper, quilting and embroidery.

The templates include hexagons and other shapes. Diagrams
illustrate the stitches and the motifs. An unusual feature is the
actual sized photos of the designs.

Four seasons are displayed on a 24½" wall-hanging, fl owers
mounted on cream background. On a cushion, a view
through a porthole shows a lighthouse and a boat.

Some of the materials, such as water soluble appliqué
paper and fusible fl eece, are new to me.
