74 British Patchwork & Quilting JULY 2019

When I hear the term ‘strippy quilt’ I automatically
think of the old quilts made from wide strips of
fabric and beautifully hand quilted. These days
a ‘strippy quilt’ is simply one made from strips –
so it includes those older ones but also a lot of
exciting modern ones, some based around Jelly
Roll strips, others using up scrap strips and right
down to string quilts. Barbara Brackman looks at
these diff erences in one of her blog posts
(bit.ly/2JxzdKI) as she asks ‘What is a strip quilt?

WITH CHRIS FRANSES

There are several interesting websites and blogs featuring
antique strippy quilts. The oldest known from the north
of England was made by Hannah Peart and is dated
1850; you can fi nd out more about it from the BBC at
bbc.in/2X1qlAa as part of their Radio 4 History of the World
series. There are several online articles and posts about
Welsh strippy quilts. As you might expect Jen Jones has
pictures of several on her website (bit.ly/2WjkSaC) and Pippa

Moss discusses one of her Welsh strippy quilts in a blog post
from 2010 (bit.ly/2YF5h2F). Carolyn Gibbs has an article on
strippy quilts on her website (bit.ly/2WjxqPg) where she looks
at the diff erence between traditional Northern English and
Welsh designs. She is hosting a talk about Antique British
Strippy Quilts at the Festival of Quilts this year on Sunday
4 August if you are interested in hearing more.

American strippy quilts tended to be a little diff erent
and often featured blocks set in strips with plain strips
between. The website Antique Quilt History has several
examples in their article about 19th century American quilts
(bit.ly/2VTz3E8) and Janette – aka The Plain Needle Woman –
has two blog posts (bit.ly/30zegEB) about her antique strippy
quilts; the fi rst shows how she repaired one of her damaged
quilts and the second looks at various examples of strippy
quilts that she owns.
