OF THE MONTH
This block was reputedly named after Frances Folsom who married, in 1886, the
American President at the time Grover Cleveland who was 49. She became the
First Lady at the young age of 21 in the only White House wedding ceremony to
date which, along with her beauty and charm, endeared her to the public. The
Ladies Art Company (LAC) published this block pattern, one from hundreds
of block patterns, in a mail order catalogue. 3" Pattern cards were sent out,
originally hand painted with watercolours by the owner’s children. The company
continued until 1974 although recently there has been a resurgence in interest
in the blocks published by the LAC. Based on a Nine Patch configuration this
block, when used alone, makes a secondary pattern across the quilt and would
be perfect to use up scraps as the sections are all quite small.MRS CLEVELAND'S CHOICE
