The northern coast of Ellesmere Island is one of the most remote and inaccessible
places in the world. Within 20 years, it will be the one place, say climate scientists,
where Arctic ice won’t fully disappear during the summer. Open water spells
doom for seals, polar bears and the complex ecosystem of algae and fish that thrives
under the surface. The federal government is monitoring ice thickness and there’s
talk of a protected area, but that won’t stop the changes already occurring because of
global warming. In one generation, much of the Great White North will melt away.
