Bite of spring

Soft, spiced buns were a hit way back in ancient Greece,
but they gained special holiday status in 1361, when a
British monk made a batch marked with crosses to hand
out to the poor on Good Friday. (They were so delicious,
it became a yearly tradition.) In that communal spirit,
we’ve made these hot cross buns as a tear-and-share
monkey bread. Bite-sized and studded with currants
and orange zest, they are a welcome start to spring.
