Human sacrifice was an important aspect
of Incan life. Those chosen were held in high
regard and it took up to a year to complete
the process. Clearly the unfamiliar nature of
the environment matches the culture of its
traditional custodians.
We woke to a stunning view of the vast
Atacama desert. We spent the day carrying
our bikes up as high as possible so we'd
only have the weight of them on our
backs for as short a time as possible
come summit day.
The march to our material depot was
arduous, the extra weight of gear from base
camp was now moved an additional 300m
upwards. The backpacks were really heavy
now. Tents, food, crampons, warm clothes, our
