Mountain Biking Australia – August 2019

(Jacob Rumans) #1

Aftermath

The symptoms of altitude sickness usually
disappear immediately when you move to
lower ground and I felt much better the day
after. I followed the team's decent via radio but
as it started to get darker I became worried.
Finally they arrived at the vehicles at 10pm
and over a necessary feast we swapped stories.
Adrenalin kept the rest of the team up despite
their drained bodies and we celebrated our
shared success long into the night.

GENERAL INFO

Accommodation
Santiago has no shortage of
accommodation options. Depending
on whether you bring your bike or chose
to hire one out your needs will adjust
accordingly.
As mentioned in the article there
are resorts dotted around so for those
(understandaly) not wanting to push
themselves to extremes you can stay in
one of these and ride nearby trails.

What next?
Make Santiago your base for any
expeditions you want to make. Before
you go, drop a line to Pato at Inner
Mountain (https://innermountain.cl).
They offer tailor-made expeditions so
just tell them what you want to achieve
or book one of their pre-made tours.

BIKING IN CHILE

It wasn't just the success on Llullaillaco but
the grand finale of Pato's entire Guradian de
Valle project. We had conquered the last Apu
Wamani but knew he would remain to guard
the Atamaca desert and its people long after
our departure.

If you're interested in hitting some
serious altitude in the Andes you can
contact Pato's travel company at
https://innermountain.cl/.

Right: Victory!

bit over, now
