TRAIL TESTED

from Shimano you can actually sharpen
up the clarity of your vision, making sunlight
and glare appear darker, and trail objects
appear brighter, leaving you to truly see
the light.’
They’re not wrong. Trying the glasses on
for the first time certainly brings with it a ‘wow
factor’. The clarity, accompanied with an
orange hue, strikes you immediately. The frame
is a full-rim and the lens a wide single piece.
It’s made from durable Grilamid TR90 material
and you don’t really notice you’re wearing
them they’re so light.
The lens itself is made from a lightweight
polycarbonate and is accompanied by an
interchangeable spare should the need arise.
The frame designs vary from Metallic Black to
Mat Olive to Mustard Yellow and Spice Red.
It comes with two types of storage, a hard
travel case and an eyewear pouch which
doubles as a lens cleaner if you take good
enough care of it.

What about on the track?

I chose the awful time of 4pm on a sunny
afternoon to put these to the test. With the
setting sun piercing through the trees and just
hitting me full on out in the open these were
the ideal conditions to see if the Technium
could actually sharpen my vision in the most
trying of conditions as they claimed.
I have to admit, I was impressed. My vision
was certainly made sharper and while my
environment did indeed become clearer,
that’s not what makes this product shine.
It’s the fact you don’t even notice you’re
wearing them that makes them stand out.
Once you get over the excitement of the lens
and its change to your vision you just start
to accept that it’s normal. The sun, although
directly in my eye line, was hardly noticeable
beyond a slightly bright spot. The lightweight
nature of these sunnies mean that five
minutes into your ride it’s as if you always saw
the world this way.
Its glare reduction and wide lens give you
an all-round better experience on the trail.
The lens too gives more clarity to the shadows
so any rough sections of trail are noticeably
clearer. A very handy feature for beginners or
those coming back to the game after a while.

Verdict

Easily the best eyewear available for under
$100. Shimano’s Technium goes further,
rivaling its more pricey cousins. The sharpness
of vision and glare reduction coupled with it’s
lightweight nature mean this necessary piece
of equipment improves your biking experience
without reminding you it’s there. Perfect for
beginners and seasoned veterans alike.
