CRITICS’ CHOICE
TIGERS are exciting to see at
the zoo, but fewer than 4,000
of them now exist in the wild.
Two tigers are killed weekly
by poachers, and their
vulnerable cubs are left
trying to survive alone.
For this very important
documentary, Martin
Hughes-Games joins
wardens and
scientists in India
as they conduct the country’s
biggest tiger count, visiting
50 conservation parks across
the vast country — and it’s all
soothingly narrated by Joanna
Lumley. Like fingerprints,
tiger stripes are unique, so
cameras will help to identify
each animal. If numbers
have gone down, we could
sadly see the end of these
big cats roaming free.
PICK OF THE DAY
FAVOURITE CONFECTION
Inside The Factory, 8pm, BBC2
THE lovely Bakewell tart is a welcome
addition to any a summer picnic, but
the delicious frangipane inside had a
far less pleasant beginning, as Ruth
Goodman finds out. Cherry Healey gets
to grips with the dreaded soggy bottom,
while Gregg Wallace has a lot of
fun at the Mr Kipling factory,
helping to make some of the
250,000 tarts produced daily.
KITCHEN QUEST
The Chefs’ Brigade,
9pm, BBC2
IS SIX weeks long enough to
turn ten young chefs into a
culinary dream team? Jason
Atherton (pictured), who has
four Michelin stars, will find
out as he tries to put together
a new brigade. The chefs
try to beat top European
brigades, but as one girl
forgets her knives on day
one, it’s not looking hopeful...
WINSTON’S HOME
Secrets Of The National
Trust, 9.15pm, Ch5
THIS week, Alan Titchmarsh
goes behind the scenes at
Chartwell in Kent — Winston
Churchill’s home. Alan learns
about the statesman’s painting
hobby and takes a
peek at his famous
bow ties. He discovers
Churchill’s secret
shelter, while historian
Dan Jones finds out
how well he protected
the cliffs of Dover.
DARK DRAMA
I Am Kirsty, 10pm, Ch4
THE second in the female-led anthology
series is a gruelling affair. Samantha
Morton (pictured with Paul Kaye) is
single mum Kirsty, who — drowning
in debt and struggling to support her
family — is forced down a dark path.
