am going to. She had a real problem being
upstaged by this pelican.
“The entire series – like every series – she
would be upstaged by this huge pelican.
She is quite hard to upstage and she is
pretty good so that was a bit of an
ongoing problem!”
Josh’s latest role is in Only You about a
young couple undergoing IVF. It is currently
showing in UK cinemas.
“It’s a film about a young couple who
meet on New Year’s Eve and they start
off this relationship that develops
quite quickly.
“She is a little bit older and they
try to conceive and they can’t.
It’s about them going through the
process of IVF and how that affects
a relationship for the good and for
the bad.
“It’s about the pressures on
women to have children and how my
character Jake navigates that.”
Since leaving drama school, Josh
hasn’t stopped working and
this year has been
filming the part of
social climbing

young vicar Mr Elton in an upcoming
adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma.
“It’s quite different from a King in waiting,
but it’s a really cool project and it features
Anya Taylor Joy as Emma and Bill Nighy as
Mr Woodhouse. It’s one to watch, for
sure,” he says.
Although he is ridiculously handsome in
the flesh, Josh admits he doesn’t always like
the way he looks, and reveals that he asked
for a “sideburn ban” on Emma after hating
how he looked in them for
Les Miserables.
“Somebody said recently
that I looked like a Hobbit in
Les Miserables, so I was on
an anti-sideburn campaign
and won, so that’s great.
“That is how you know you
have arrived...”
In fact, Josh is so self-
conscious about his looks that
unlike most of his selfie-
obsessed profession, he refuses
to post snaps of himself
on Instagram.
“A lot of actors
will post pic-
tures of them-
selves in the
make-up chair,
but I can’t bear

looking at myself in the
mirror so when I get in
the chair I look down
and they have to move
my head up.
“I am a keen artist so
instead I put all the
drawings that I have
done on Instagram just
to save you all the
embarrassment of me in
the mirror.”
Next month, Josh will
embark on filming the fourth
series of The Crown,
which is due to be released
next year.
And he jokes that while
fans are really lovely to him
at the moment, playing
Charles, the prince caught
between two loves, might
change that.
He admits: “I can still
go to the pub and if ever
anyone does stop me and
say anything – which isn’t
all that often – it’s always
really nice.
“Fans are really kind for
now, but maybe playing Charles will
change that!”
