HE day I realised I
had microwaveable
porridge for breakfast
and instant noodles for
lunch, an alarm bell
rang in my head. I
didn’t immediately realise why
I was feeling so out of sorts.
But it suddenly struck me; a
combination of stress and
exhaustion meant I had
stopped bothering about the
little things in my life.
You might know what I
mean. Those ordinary, small
activities, the daily rituals that,
in the normal course of events,
you might not notice but, when
missing, leave you without
purpose, drifting.
Putting on a smart outfit,
cooking a proper meal and
eating with nice cutlery, arrang-
ing to meet friends for the
theatre or cinema. But once
you get out of the habit, it’s
very hard to get it back.
Life events had accumulated
over the past few years to send
me off the chart on the stress
scale; a divorce, the death of
my beloved father and the
gradual emptying of my nest as
my children left home for their
own adult lives.
I work from home so I was
living in leggings and baggy
jumpers (the writer’s uniform),
with my hair in a scrunchie,
and not going out much
because it seemed like too
much effort.

B

UT that small internal
alarm bell made me
determined to do
something about the little
things I had stopped bothering
about. My maternal grand-
mother was the doyenne of
“bothering”. She had fruit
knives and linen napkins and
always wore proper jewellery.
I resolved to take a leaf out
of her book. And it very
quickly made a huge difference
to how I felt both about myself
and about life. Going out of my
way to make an effort was not
just a distraction, it gave me a
purpose. I began to take pride
in myself and my environment,
establishing good habits and
going the extra mile.
I quickly came to realise how
truly uplifting these little daily
rituals can be. I’m not a com-
plete control freak, but I really
enjoy being mindful about the
details of daily life, and it’s
given me a much greater sense
of purpose and achievement.
Perfectly laundered sheets
and fresh flowers put a smile on
my face. It really is worth the
bother. I think my grandmother
would be proud!

MAKING MY BED
PROPERLY
I started to make a ritual of
making my “nest” every day.
Not just tugging up the
duvet, but airing the bed first,
then re-making it to five-star
hotel perfection with properly
plumped pillows.
It gives a sense of order to
the day and is wonderful to get

into at night. I learnt how to do
hospital corners at boarding
school and oh how we grum-
bled, but now I love a properly
tucked-in sheet.

LAYING THE TABLE
I do this religiously now even if
it’s just me eating; setting a
place properly with a placemat,
cutlery, napkin, water and
wine glass. It makes
eating an occasion
and a pleasure.
And now
I’m slightly
obsessed with
table linen,
from vintage
lace table-
cloths to
stone-washed
linen napkins I
brought back from
the South of France.

NOT SAVING THE BEST
FOR BEST
I have a trove of beautiful
things I inherited from my
grandmother, and for years
they have been kept in cabinets
and drawers awaiting some sort
of momentous occasion, which
of course never came.
She used a lot of it every day,
so I decided I would too,
from pretty little
cake forks to her
collection of
Waterford
glass. They
are all the
better for
being used.
The other
day I had
friends for
lunch so I dug
out my grand-
mother’s tiny little

liqueur glasses and served eve-
ryone a slosh of Cointreau to
go with the almond and orange
cake. It gave me such pleasure.

WRITING PROPER THANK
YOU LETTERS
We have all done it. Prodded
out a quick text saying: “Thnx
for a gr8 night”. But somehow
this seems perfunctory and
doesn’t show enough
appreciation.
A properly written thank
you note gives you time to slow
down and really think about
what you are saying. And the
recipient will feel much more
appreciated when they see the
envelope on their doormat.

IRONING THE SMALL
STUFF
As the mother of three boys, I
have done everything I can to
