avoid the torture of the ironing
board – buying crease-free
clothing and smoothing it out
when it emerges from the dryer.
But every now and then I have a
dedicated morning for all those
things that really benefit from a
hot iron.
I put on a good radio play, get
out my lavender water and work
my way through pillowcases and
tea towels until I have a beautiful,
sweetly-scented pile.
PUTTING ON A FACE
I had become tired of seeing my
rather weary, unglamorous face
in the mirror. So now every
morning, I make my
face up properly
even though I
might not be
seeing anyone.
Just a light
application of
tinted moistur-
iser, mascara
and lip gloss
means I don’t
need to hide from
the postman.
CLEANING OUT
MY CAR
I wouldn’t sit in my living room
with empty Costa cups, sandwich
wrappers and parking tickets, so
why did I put up with them in
my car? I make a habit now of
cleaning it out regularly. I spend
a lot of time driving, so having it
pristine makes a huge difference
instead of travelling in a mobile
dustbin.
HAVING FRESH FLOWERS
Fresh flowers bring a room to life,
and make it smell glorious. I pick
up a bunch whenever I go to the
supermarket – they are often
marked down so it’s not
too expensive. Taking
the time to arrange
them properly is
the perfect
moment to stop
and think.
POLISHING
MY SHOES
My father was
in the army so
shoe cleaning was
a habit that was
ingrained in him. But I
had long stopped bother-
ing as I mostly wear trainers and
flip-flops. Now, once a month, I
go through all my shoes and
brush off the dirt, see if anything
needs repairing and put in new
laces if they are needed. No
more scrabbling around for the
perfect pair and finding them the
worse for wear (literally!).
MAKING A DATE ONCE
A WEEK
It takes effort to have an active
social life but it’s worth it. I now
make sure to put some sort of
outing into the diary with friends
once a week, whether it’s supper
out or a movie or just a drink in
the pub. Having that date gives
me something to look forward to
and gives a shape to the week.
And once you start making an
effort, things snowball.

HAPPY:
Veronica
has a sense
of purpose
now after
she began
her daily
rituals
group and has speech
and language therapy.
Paul, from
Cheltenham, Glos, said:
“Every Monday morning
I attend a group with
other stroke survivors
and it’s great. For the
first time, I recognise
there are other people
like me.
“I love doing my art
too, it’s helped so much.
I love pastels,
watercolours and oil
painting even though
I’ve had to learn to do it
with my left hand.
“My speech is
improving, it’s getting
better and better. From
day one, I’ve tried to be
positive and to keep
going up and up.”
Stuart Cooper, of the
Stroke Association, said
Paul’s hard work since
his stroke is “a real
inspiration” for others.
He called for people to
help at the groups, which
“can be a lifeline for
people like Paul”.
A MAN suffered a
severe stroke after a
nasty cold and cough
caused a rip in an artery.
Paul Park, who had no
underlying health issues,
could only say a few
words and had no use in
his right hand side.
The 49-year-old had to
quit his job of 30 years
working in IT at the
Ministry of Defence.
He said: “I had a nasty
cold and a violent cough
in the week leading up
to my stroke, which may
have caused the damage
to the artery in my neck.
“I remember my eyes
just feeling like tiny little
things that kept going
and coming back.
“After my stroke, I
spent six months in
rehabilitation. I could
only say three words:
‘yes,’ ‘no,’ and
‘computer’.”
But Paul has slowly
improved in the two
years since, helped by a
new passion for art. He
also attends a Stroke
