● Dieters who struggle to give up
their favourite dishes will be
encouraged by research
suggesting eating meals earlier
can help them shed pounds.
A US study found overweight
people eating all three main meals
by 2pm burnt more fat despite
eating the same food. Participants
also had reduced appetite and
lower levels of hunger hormones.
Researchers say this could be
key to weight loss without having
to change what we eat.
Author Eric Ravussin, of
Louisiana State University, said:
“Coordinating meals with
circadian rhythms, your body’s
internal clock, may be a powerful

strategy for reducing appetite and
improving metabolic health.”
Eleven adults aged 20 to 45
underwent analysis between 2014
and 2016. A respiratory chamber
room was used to measure
metabolism, assessing how many
calories, carbohydrates, fat and
protein were being burned.
Fat burning was increased in the
early eating group. The number of
calories burnt was unaffected.

● Tips on “deathbed etiquette”
have been released to help
people prepare for the final
moments of loved ones’ lives.
Advice includes reassuring
them they are “free to let go”,

being ready in case they die while
you are out of the room and not
being afraid if they talk of dead
relatives “coming to meet them”.
People are warned their loved
one may sleep a lot and that their
breathing may stop and start as
they near death.
The Art of Dying Well website

Mary’s University was designed
using contributions by hospice
workers, palliative care experts,
nurses, chaplains and families.
Project director Margaret
Doherty said: “It’s to help
families and friends who aren’t
sure what to do or what to say.

Q

I HAD a red rash under my skin.
It started on my arms then went
to the top of my legs. A dermatologist
diagnosed lymphoid infiltrate by
doing a biopsy. It had started to fade
but keeps coming back. The doctor
said I have to go back in six months
but if it changes to go back sooner.
Is this something I need to worry
about? I don’t even know what it is.

A

LYMPHOID infiltrate is the
name given to a rare condition
where a type of white blood cell,
known as lymph cells, collect in the
skin. The lesions feel solid, are red or
pink and can occur anywhere.
The skin around the lesions may
feel a bit itchy and though the lesions
may remain unchanged for years,
they may spontaneously disappear.

The cause isn’t known but the
condition may be linked to some
other skin disorders, including lupus.
It can make the skin more sensitive
to the sun, so it’s important to protect
your skin by wearing a sunblock of at
least a SPF30 all the time.
If the lesions are bothering you
then steroids, either as a cream or
taken as tablets, can be tried.
Very occasionally, especially in
older people, lymphoid infiltrate may
be an early sign of lymphoma, a
malignant condition of the lymph
glands. It is important your skin is
checked regularly by a dermatologist
so keep attending your appointments.
