theme to the first in the new series
of INSIDE THE FACTORY (BBC2,
8pm), presented by Gregg Wallace
and Cherry Healey.
Our hosts are in Stoke-on-Trent,
finding out how Mr Kipling makes
his cherry bakewells (Cherry
Healey, cherry bakewells, oh,
the comedy potential...).
The answer is he doesn’t. He gets
his workforce to make them.
It’s all jolly mechanised these
days, but with a vital finishing
touch still done by hand.
“They haven’t found a machine
yet,” explains worker Sue, who’s
done this particular job now for
13 years, “that’s able to put the
cherries on.”

cooking, we’re told, focuses on
simple, fresh, local ingredients
served with minimal fuss, but
then name me a food region that
doesn’t say that.
More interestingly, Jason says
Puglia’s food, when you’re eating
it, “just feels alive”, so personally
I’d steer clear of the octopus.
Anyway, the overall feel of
the show is kind of intense and
full-on – lots of stress, lots of
shouting, a few tears, some
hugging, not an abundance of
laughs – so if you’re in the mood
to be emotionally drained on
a Tuesday night, I dare say you’ll
be hooked.
Before that, there’s also a food

is known as the brigade.” So there
we have it.
Before we’ve even had the
chance to ask why this show is
called what it’s called, Jason has
dished up the answer for us.
He doesn’t answer the obvious
follow-up question – namely,
that if he’s the guy in charge, why
isn’t the apostrophe before the S

T

HE first words you’ll
hear tonight on a new
series called THE
CHEFS’ BRIGADE
(BBC2, 9pm) are
those of a man
declaring: “I’m obsessed with
food.” Surprisingly, this man is not
the controller of BBC2. It’s
Jason Atherton, the Michelin-star
chap who’s leading this latest
challenge.
Jason tells us food is his life (“It’s
who I am...”), but then adds (and
this is clearly the important bit): “If
you want to make world-class food,
it’s never about one individual.
“It’s always about building a
team. And in the kitchen, that team

  • but hey, let’s not get too picky
    for now.
The idea of the series (I thought
you’d never ask) is to give a
bunch of people with raw talent
    (people currently cooking in
    hotels, gastropubs etc.) the
    chance to flourish.
Jason is taking them on a
    culinary jaunt across Europe,
stopping en route to cook off
    against brigades from some of
    the continent’s most fancypants
    eateries. (He doesn’t say
    “fancypants” by the way.)
    First up, Jason and his
gastronauts (a far better title, why
didn’t they go for that?) are in
Puglia, Italy. It’s a place where the

DID YOU KNOW? While filming Torchwood in 2011 Eve
Myles moved her family to Hollywood, living beneath
the Hollywood sign. ‘I always said I didn’t think
Hollywood was for me, but it just happened,’ she said.

PICKS OF THE DAY

Nature: Counting Tigers: A Survival
Special, ITV, 9pm

Drama: I am Kirsty, C4, 10pm

Soap: Emmerdale, ITV, 8pm

Drama: Ackley Bridge, C4,
8pm

Drama: Keeping Faith,
BBC2, 9pm

We often forget the other species that
walk the Earth as we go about our
increasingly hectic lives. Luckily this
documentary is a stark reminder of
the natural beauty that exists within
the animal kingdom and its often
fragile nature. This programme
examines a wildlife survey being
conducted to take stock of India’s
tiger population, the results of which
could be monumentally important to
the animal’s future. The camera
crew is given unprecedented
access to follow the survey across
50 tiger reserves and 400,000km
in search of one of the most
elusive predators on Earth. Narrated
by Joanna Lumley.

Samantha Morton (above) stars in the second
episode of the drama anthology series as a single
mother who has been struggling with debt since her
partner disappeared. A neighbour makes an offer
of support, but his kindness is not all it seems to be

  • and she soon finds herself faced with some dark
and desperate decisions. With Paul Kaye (above)
    and Vinette Robinson.

Bernice goes to great lengths to get her man by
staging a fund raising Wild West day, but really it’s to
woo Liam. Her plan seems to be coming together
when Liam agrees to be the town’s sheriff and makes
a dramatic entrance on horseback on the main street.
‘Marshals’ Dan (Liam Fox) and Jimmy (Nick Miles)
decide to lock Kerry and Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson,
above with Fox and Miles) in a cell together.

This engaging school-
based series shows no
signs of becoming
boring any time soon
and it’s all go tonight.
Tonight, Mandy tries to
find out who is
responsible for a rumour
that is spreading around
the school that Cory is the
father of her baby – only
to discover a secret
concerning Sian. Chloe
outs Nas in the middle of
a school fund raiser,
while Rukhsana
accompanies Spud (Zara
Salim, right) as she sets
off on a quest in search
of her father.

The lawyer steps in to
represent Madlen
Vaughan after she fires
her entire legal team.
While the decision wins
the support of Cerys, it
also sets them both on a
collision course with Tom.
Steve wrestles with his
personal feelings
concerning Faith, Evan
discovers he has a
mysterious benefactor in
prison and DI Breeze
turns his attentions
towards Faith’s troubling
association with Gael
Reardon. Eve Myles (left)
and Aimee-Ffion
Edwards star.
