RUPERT AND THE DOVER SOLE No 2
Arriving at his cottage Rupert finds
Mrs Bear. “I say, Mummy,” he calls.
“I’ve just seen a gorse bush that
seems to smell of violets.” “That’s
queer!” says Mrs Bear. “There was a
scent of violets here too, that’s what
brought me out to pick our flowers.
Now it’s changed to a lemon scent.
There’s a plant called lemon verbena
that gives that, but we haven’t got
any.” Rupert looks around and then
thoughtfully picks a roadside weed.
“The same scent everywhere!” he
says. “Whatever can be causing it?”

Says Mummy, “This scent is queer,
For we have no verbena here.”

Then Rupert sniffs a roadside weed,
The smell is very strong indeed.

ALAN’S TIP OF THE DAY: If you are growing a giant pumpkin, select the biggest and strongest and
remove all the others from the plant. Nip out the growing tips of the shoots and step up
the rate of feeding and watering so the plant diverts all its energies into swelling up one.

You are spending too much time
worrying about what other people think.
Ask yourself: is this the place you want to
be? Do what you want to do. If you crave
excitement, introduce new activities into
your days that might perk up your life.

Everyone wants your company.
Trust your instincts when someone
asks you out on a date. There is every
likelihood your first impressions will be
reliable. Social arrangements will give you
something to look forward to.

You never expect a lot from a
partner and you’re upset because they
have let you down today. You need to
think about whether this relationship
really works for you. You may not be as
compatible as you first thought.

A friend’s moodiness will
take some of the shine off a fun social
event. Meditation and long walks in the
countryside are ways to soothe your soul.
Think of arranging this soon or obey an
urge to retreat to a quiet hideaway.

A partner wants to air some
grievances. If there is conflict in the family,
be careful about taking sides. Sometimes
it is better to sit on the fence. Keep a
demanding neighbour at arm’s length as
they will never be satisfied

A friend takes it for granted that
you will always be available to help them
out. This upsets a loved one who feels you
are doing too much for others. An older
relative has your best interests at heart
when they offer some good advice.

You’re always splashing out
on luxury items for other people but
settling for second best for yourself. It is
time to change this and treat yourself to
something special for a change. Equally,
don’t allow people to pressure you.

Despite their promise to change,
a partner is behaving as if they don’t
trust you. You are hurt that they doubt
your loyalty and you wonder if their
behaviour has something to do with a past
relationship they just won’t talk about.

It will be tempting to give in to the
whims of loved ones or children but their
ideas for entertainment could be costly. Are
you single? Someone who has eyes for
you feels shy about showing their interest.
It may be up to you to make the first move.

Remember there are only so
many hours in a day. You need to tell
people “no”. If you can’t make a move
without a partner wanting to know where
you are going, why, and when will you be
back, it might be time to call it a day.

You need something to lift your
spirits. Treating yourself to a luxury will
feel good. Someone will inform you how
wasteful retail therapy can be but if you
are keeping track of your spending and it
makes you happy, how can it be reckless.

A colleague will try to evade their
responsibilities. They won’t think twice
about passing their commitments on to
you. It’s important to stop people from
taking advantage of your kindness so it
may be necessary to put your foot down.
