2018: Stradivarius 4-9-9, Andrea Atzeni 4-5 Fav (J Gosden), drawn (6), 7 ran.
GUIDE: This is all about STRADIVARIUS, who chases a third straight success in the race. John
Gosden’s charge beat Big Orange when a three-year-old in 2017 (gd) and had to work hard to
deny the gutsy Torcedor 12 months ago (gd). Versatile in regards to trip and ground, this
likeable chestnut has returned this year in great form having beaten the reopposing Southern
France in the Yorkshire Cup (1m6f, gd-fm) before once again reigning supreme in the Ascot
Gold Cup (2m4f, sft) at the expense of the reopposing Dee Ex Bee (second) and Cross Counter

2018: Alfarris 4-9-0, Jim Crowley 13-2 Fav (W Haggas), drawn (3), 15 ran.
GUIDE: SETTING SAIL broke his maiden over C&D (sft) in 2017 and although he
missed the whole of last year, he’s returned in great order this term and looked
as good as ever when ratting the crossbar in a valuable York (1m2f, gd-fm)
handicap last time. Mark Johnston has won three of the last seven renewals of
this contest so his Ventura Knight and Aquarium both command respect.
Others to consider are recent Sandown (1m, gd-fm) runner-up Nicklaus, who is
unexposed over this trip and sports a first-time tongue-tie, and Soto Sizzler,
who won at this meeting (1m4f, gd) 12 months ago.

2018: Dark Vision 9-1, Silvestre De Sousa 10-3 Fav (M Johnston), drawn (7),
12 ran.
GUIDE: An impressive winner on debut at Newmarket (6f, gd-fm), VISINARI had
stride pattern analysts crying into their cornflakes the morning after he was
turned over in the July Stakes (6f, gd-fm), though he was still only beaten by a
neck in third on the latter occasion, just in behind Platinum Star (second), who
reopposes here. He could feasibly revert to winning ways now stepped up in
trip. The main danger may be Pinatubo, who had Lope Y Fernandez back in
second when running away with the Chesham (7f, gd) last time and appears to
be on a sharp upward curve.

2018: Sir Dancealot 4-9-3, Gerald Mosse 5-1 JtFav (D Elsworth), drawn (4),

GUIDE: ZAAKI has improved no end this year, a typical progressive type from
Sir Michael Stoute. Wins at Ascot (1m, gd-fm) and Epsom (1m1f, gd-fm) set up a
tilt at the Summer Mile Stakes at the former venue (1m, gd-fm) earlier this
month and the gutsy Beat The Bank denied him only by a nose. He travelled into
the race powerfully on that occasion and this drop to 7f is taken to suit on that
evidence. Hey Gaman couldn’t round off the hat-trick in the Minstrel Stakes at
the Curragh (7f, gd) recently but is worth another chance, while Space
Traveller won the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot (7f, gd) and is another to note.

tomorrow.
The Paul Nicholls-trained
eight-year-old claimed his 14th

career victory in the Oaksey Chase

Nicholls, who saddled the last
British-trained winner of Ireland’s

five confirmed runners for leading
owner JP McManus.
There are two other British

Johnston is never cowed by
defeat and throws Dee Ex Bee into
the lion’s cage for the second time
with Stradivarius in today’s
Goodwood Cup.
“There is nothing we can do
about Stradivarius,” he said. “We
can’t belittle him, and we are not
sure if he has any chinks in his

from one horse.”
Johnston, who has saddled a
record-breaking 48 winners this
month, also rates the chance of
Visinari in today’s Vintage Stakes.
Others to note include: Sir Ron

tomorrow), Dark Vision (Golden

Johnston will eventually pass the
baton to his son – though not in the
immediate future.
“Charlie couldn’t wait for me to

him now he admits the job is bigger
than he thought.”
Johnston appreciates that his
early success at Goodwood helped
him become Britain’s most
successful Flat trainer after Poet’s
Society gave him a 4,194th winner
at York last year.
“We won races early on at
Goodwood and that really started
our relationship with the

IT might be 300 miles from his

Johnston has taken top honours
at the five-day meeting on 12
occasions, saddling 78 winners in
the process. Not surprisingly, he has
a top team primed for the week.
“Goodwood, along with Royal
Ascot, is a meeting that we plan
for,” he explained. “We do a
spreadsheet in advance and pencil
in all the possible horses. They are
the only two meetings we do that
for.”
