Chiefs backing Nowell to

be fit for World Cup duty

ENGLAND will take no
chances on Jack Nowell after
the winger returned home
from their training camp in
Italy.
Nowell, right, is back to
complete a routine medical
assessment following ankle
surgery in mid-June.
The Exeter star, capped 33
times, was injured in last
month’s Premiership final
defeat by Saracens.
And although a date for
his comeback was not given,
the Chiefs insisted he would

be available for the World
Cup.
England are also confident
Nowell, 26, will be fit
and firing ahead of the
tournament in Japan which
starts in September.
Yet Nowell is unlikely to
feature in England’s first
warm-up match against
Wales on August 11 – just
24 hours before the 31-man
World Cup squad is named.
Nowell will continue his

rehabilitation at his club,
with the first of England’s
two camps in Treviso ending
on Friday.
Forward Brad Shields
also flew home early from
the warm-weather training
for tests on a foot injury.
Coach Eddie Jones
breathed a sigh
of relief after scans
revealed the New
Zealand-born flanker
had suffered only
minor ligament
damage.

Oops, not again
RENAULT capped a
bad weekend at the
German Grand Prix by
crashing again. A team
lorry ploughed off the
motorway on its way to
the Hungarian Grand
Prix. Thankfully the
driver wasn’t badly hurt.

FORMULA ONE: MERCEDES INQUEST

Hamilton delivered a plea to

his team to bring in Mercedes

NIGHTMARE:
Hamilton
shows the
strain after
German GP

LEWIS HAMILTON begged
Mercedes to retire him
from Sunday’s chaotic German
Grand Prix.
In a radio message that was not
aired during the incident-packed
race, the world champion urged
his team to pull him out with
11 laps remaining.
After crashing for a second time
on an error-ridden afternoon at
Hockenheim, Hamilton was about
to drop to last place ahead of a
staggering sixth pit stop when he
made the call.
However, Mercedes instructed
Hamilton, who finished 11th
before later being bumped up two
places, to continue.
“OK Lewis, box for new
soft tyres,” said race engineer
Pete Bonnington on lap 53.
“Retire the car,” Hamilton
replied.
“Negative, Lewis, negative,”
said Bonnington. “There are
always opportunities.”
Hamilton was
promoted after
Alfa Romeo
pair Kimi

Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi
received time penalties for a
technical infringement.
That allowed the Briton to
extend his championship lead over
Valtteri Bottas to 41 points
following the Finn’s late crash on a
forgettable afternoon for Mercedes
at their home event.
Hamilton led for almost half the
race before he crashed in the wet
conditions, paving the way for
Max Verstappen to claim a second
win of the season.
The Mercedes driver returns for
this weekend’s Hungarian Grand
Prix, the final round before the
summer break.
Before then, Hamilton will
spend a few days recovering from
a virus.
Hamilton only raced in
Germany after being cleared by
FIA doctors.
“Lewis wasn’t healthy the whole
weekend, but he did the most he
could to get himself in an OK
place for the race,” said Mercedes
team principal Toto Wolff.
“Many wouldn’t
have considered being
in the car but he
did. You can’t be at
your best when
you’ve been ill.”
