Being socially active in your 50s and
60s may help lower the risk of devel-
oping dementia in later life, a study
has found.
Researchers studied data that
tracked more than 10,000 people
from 1985 to 2013. The participants
answered a questionnaire every fi ve
years about the frequency of their
social contact with friends and rel-
atives. They were also subject to
cognitive testing, and electronic
health records were searched for
dementia diagnoses.
The results – published in the jour-
nal Plos Medicine – showed that seeing
friends almost daily at aged
60 was associated with a

Boris Johnson faced a grave threat to
his control of parliament last night
when he was warned that Tory rebels
could cross the fl oor of the Commons
to foil Brexit after a byelection reduced
his working majority to just one MP.
The Liberal Democrat candidate,
Jane Dodds , won a crucial vote in
Brecon and Radnorshire yesterday by
a margin of 1,425 , overturning the Tor y
majority of more than 8,000.
The result prompted immediate
recriminations across the party. No-
deal sceptics warned about the rapidly
growing threat the government could
face from the reinvigorated Lib Dems,
while insiders blamed Theresa May’s
administration for choosing a candi-
date, Chris Davies, who had already
been ousted for expenses fraud.
One of the most prominent Con-
servative supporters of a second
referendum told the Guardian yester-
day that he was actively considering
defecting to the Lib Dems or sitting as
an independent, a move that would
leave Johnson at the helm of a minor-
ity government.
Dr Phillip Lee, a former justice min-
ister who fi rst suggested he could quit
the party in his own podcast, On the

ment pursued no deal. “I have things
to think about over the summer but it
is not just me,” he said.
“There are a number of colleagues
who are spending the summer refl ect-
ing on what is the right way for them
to confront this no-deal scenario.
