Look at this – a one-stop medical kit for the
whole family. Put together with the help of Dr
Willie Roux, a paediatrician from Worcester
in the Western Cape, this medicine chest
arms you to deal with almost any emergency
or common illness. It’s got the dressings, the
drugs and the tools (hello, thermometer) and
also some booklets (on CPR, for instance)
that might just prove life-saving during an
emergency. Best to read them before... Plus,
the sturdy container is big enough for everything to remain upright. Order at
kidzmedikit.co.za or KidzMediKit on Facebook – R895 for the full kit.

A first aid kit for the whole family

It’s winter in Cape Town, and it’s raining
cats and dogs... How about going
underwater without getting wet? We’re
talking about taking the children to see
The Little Mermaid, on at the Canal Walk
Theatre from 15 June to 7 July.
It’s the tale of tails that became
superfamous with the late-1980s Disney film,
but the story about Ariel, the young mermaid
who wanted to become human, was written
by fairy-tale master Hans Christian Andersen
in the early 19th century.
This musical adaptation of the story for
the stage promises “magnificent costumes,
breathtaking sets and charming puppets”,
and a lovely local cast including Alexis
Petersen as Ariel and Cindy-Ann Abrahams
as the sea witch. Tickets are R100 each
from Computicket.

Poison – pasop!
It’s estimated that more than 1.2 million
children under five are poisoned
accidentally every year. Private hospital
group Netcare reports that nine out of 10
times, poison exposure occurs at home.
So, what steps have you taken to ensure
your little ones are not in danger? Here
are a few tips:

  • Keep your cleaning products in
their original packaging to avoid any
confusion. • Store poisonous items in
cabinets, and lock them with child safety
    locks. • Choose child-resistant medication
packages if you can, and throw out
unused medication. • Never tell a child
that medicine is a sweet to encourage
them to take it. • Check product labels for
poisonous ingredients. • If you suspect
poisoning, seek medical care ASAP –
don’t wait for symptoms to develop.
Call 082 911 for poison information.

The oral tradition has such
a strong presence on our
continent. Building on this
legacy, BookBeak (bookbeak.
co.za) – a new storytelling
app developed by Africans for
Africans – makes it possible for
our stories, new and old, to be
shared with the world.
Founded by three South
Africans – Kamo Sesing, Cam
Naidoo and Louis Enslin –
BookBeak claims to be the first
African app-based platform
to aggregate the continent’s
short stories from published,
unpublished and self-published
writers and share them.
And BookBeak has some
stories for children too – yay!
What a pleasure no longer
having to run around to find

relevant and appropriate
stories in which our children
can recognise themselves.
“We’ve created a library
of beautiful, culturally relevant
African short stories just
for children.
“This allows their creativity
and imagination to flourish
while engaging with the
diverse library on the app,”
Kamo told IT Web.
A special feature allows you
to replace main characters
with your child’s name – we
can’t think of a better way to
really absorb a story.
Download the app for free
from the Android and iOS app
stores, and a monthly subs fee
of R59 gives you access to the
full BookBeak library.
