FINAL TONING
Highlight the top
layer and press Cmd/
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E to
merge a copy of all the
layers, then go to Filter
> Camera Raw Filter.
Use the tonal controls
to finish off the image.
We used Artistic 06
in the Profile Browser,
then increased Shadows
and Clarity slightly and
reduced Saturation.

One of the key features of layers is the
ability it gives you to keep elements
separate and editable from one another. Here
it allows you to position each part of the image
independently of everything else, just as if you
were arranging separate pieces of paper into a
collage.
Understanding layer hierarchy is key
here. The layers on top of the layer stack will
obscure the details of those underneath, so
it’s important to know where a layer sits in the
stack. When you have a document with lots of
layers like this, it can be helpful to use the Move
tool and enable Auto-Select in the options: this
lets you click on parts of the image to select
the layer that occupies the area. Alternatively,
you can right-click over a point in the image to
see a list of all the layers that are present in
that particular spot.
