To take your stroboscopic shots
to another level, why not add a
second burst of flash? You could either
sync this with the first flash, so that
they both fire in unison, or instead do as
we’ve done here, and pop it off manually
during the exposure. This way, it adds
extra light to one moment in the pose.
You can see here how this works. In the
‘Before’ image, the light is coming from
a single stroboscopic flashgun, behind
and to the left of the subject. In the ‘After’
image, we added a single burst from
camera-right, fired manually by pressing
the ‘test’ button towards the end of our
second-long exposure. It adds shape
and definition to the rightmost position.

Using a second light can introduce an extra
dimension to this eye-catching effect

AFTER

QUICK TIP
The angle of light from flashguns must
encompass the entire path of the subject
as she moves position. Move it back if
you need to increase the angle.
