216 JUNE - JULY 2019

T

he martini is a simple cocktail
achieved through a series of complex
steps. Choices along the way include
shaken or stirred, olives or not, how many, if
yes? Lemon twist? Bitters? Wet or dry?
At the Gin Bar by Jyran — unveiled
earlier this year at the French luxury hotel
Sofitel Mumbai BKC — there are even more
decisions to make: Would you like the
chic Normand label Le Gin de Christian
Drouin? Or something from the Cotswolds
Distillery if you prefer your drink a tad dry?
Or perhaps, Stranger & Sons for those
subscribing to the local movement. On
offer at this specialist bar, the first of its
kind in the city, are 30 different brands of
gin — from 11 countries — with more to be
added in months to come.
Among the white spirits, gin has more
flavour and depth than vodka and hence
lends itself exceptionally to the cocktail
experience. The quintessentially British
spirit also has an interesting Indian

connection. The G&T (Gin and Tonic) was
invented in India in the early 19th century
when British soldiers mixed quinine (an
anti-malaria medicine) with lime, sugar
and, eventually, a dash of gin. And so, it
was about time to add a dedicated gin
establishment on home ground.
At the Gin Bar which is located in
the award-winning, signature restaurant,
Jyran - Tandoor Dining & Lounge, the gins
have been curated with eight homemade
infusions such as Saffron, Chamomile,
Earl Grey tea and Rosemary. The bar’s
made-to-order, innovative new-age
gin cocktails and stylish service by the
BarChefs of Sofitel Mumbai BKC are
coupled with a relaxed yet chic vibe, and
it promises to become a part of Mumbai’s
modern cocktail history.
