■ ANDREW POOLE got his barbel
campaign off to the best possible
start with this 16 lb 15 oz
‘whisker’ from the River Thames.
The 44-year-old Harlow, Essex,
angler offered a single 12 mm
Dynamite pellet with a 4 oz
running lead and a size 11 hook.
He’d baitdroppered two pints
of hemp and half a kilo of mixed
sizes of pre-soaked Dynamite
pellets to a gravel bar close in.
Andrew said: “Around 3.20am
my rod tip slammed around like
only a barbel could achieve.
“After a slow, dogged
20-minute battle, I slid the net
under the beast, knowing from
my head-torch that I may have
equalled or beaten my PB, which
stood at 16 lb 7 oz.”
■ FORMER Angler’s Mail reporter
Gary Newman notched up his
33rd and 34th double-fi gure
tench with a brace of tincas
scaling 10 lb 10 oz and 10 lb 7 oz.
Chesham, Buckinghamshire-
based Gary added an 8 lb 3 oz
sample at a Colne Valley lake,
using double Enterprise Tackle
Imitation Casters hair-rigged on
a size 12 Guru MWGB hook to a
10 lb braided trace and an in-line
lead, fi shed Method-style.
The 42-year-old all-rounder
said: “The tench population
at this water has dwindled
signifi cantly over the years, so
I fed quite lightly, but I was still
surprised when within an hour
I had a take and found myself
attached to what I initially
thought was a carp.
“It went off so powerfully and
took quite a bit of line, but I soon
realised it was a tench, and it
felt big, so I played it carefully
and eventually managed to net a
chunky fi sh of 10 lb 7 oz.
“The following morning passed
without any signs of fi sh, but
then I saw one roll, and around
1.30pm I found myself connected
to another good fi sh, this one
10 lb 10 oz,” added the Korda TV
production manager.
