I

’VE been hearing more and
more about the impact of
otters on fi sheries, especially
in West Wales, where coarse
fi shing has been on the
increase for a number of
years, to the benefi t of
tourism.
One fi shery has reportedly
been affl icted so badly,
the owner has contacted
a member of the Welsh
Assembly to express his
concern at his loss of
business, and the lack
of support from Natural
Resources Wales.
Fishery owners are asking

why grants for fencing
are being made by the EA
through the Angling Trust
in England from rod licence
income, but in Wales the NRW
offers no fi nancial support
whatsoever.
Support is needed before
more fi sheries are damaged
beyond any chance of a
recovery and further jobs lost.
There’s a need to record
the damage done by otters in
rivers and stillwaters in Wales,
to assess the impact so far. If
any fi shery drops me a line,
I can tell our readers what is
being encountered.

waggler in mid-river best at
Sandy Lane Ferry. Fish a feeder
on the Meadows, from the
Kissing Gate to Appleyards, for
the bream and roach on worm

big perch here. Lure anglers are
fi nding pike while roaming.

catches of small chub, and
barbel to 8 lb.
Tactics? Maggot feeder for
the chub, or feeder with halibut

or Robin Red 8 mm pellets
for the barbel. Very little weed
above Hay bridge, so fi shing is
over silt or gravel and bedrock.
Early morning or after 5pm

swimmers.

casters and hemp for dace
