I love bowling and

could bowl, bowl, and

bowl. When you see the

stumps flying, that’s the

best feeling. Jasprit Bumrah

If Test match cricket is the ultimate Test of one’s
cricketing abilities and talent then Bumrah is well on
track to prove his true worth. With 49 wickets in 10 Test
matches at an average below 22 runs a piece, Bumrah
is definitely among the best fast bowling talent in the
world. With a top bowling speed in excess of 150 kmph,
the world may have yet to see the best of Jasprit Bumrah.

even a red ball and a white ball do not
behave in the same fashion so a tennis
ball has absolutely no comparison. To
generate accuracy with a tennis ball,
a fast bowler would have to bend his
elbow more than what he may like to do
while bowling with a cricket ball. (Cricket
laws permit fifteen degree bending of the
elbow for pace bowlers).

It is the Indian Premier League that
exposed Jasprit Bumrah’s unique talent
wherein he continued to contain even the
best batmen in the death overs by bowling
yorker after yorker. Consequently, Jasprit
made his One Day International debut, as well
as, his T20 International debut in January 2016
against Australia but had to wait for another
two years to be considered good enough to
make a Test appearance. His maiden Test wicket
would be something that he would cherish for
ever as he clean bowled the deadly AB de Villiers.

Born in Ahmedabad, on 6 December 1993, Jasprit
lost his father, an industrialist, when he was just
seven years old. He wanted to be a cricketer since
his very childhood but his mother did not see a
very bright future for her son in the game till the latter
started hitting the headlines. Playing for Gujarat in the
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Jasprit made his T20 debut
against Maharashtra, in 2013. He was an instant success
as he was adjudged as the Man of the Match. Since then,
this young fast bowler has not looked back and seems
destined for several laurels in the future.

Even in the recently concluded ICC World Cup, Jasprit
came close to winning the Man of the Match award in
two games but Rohit Sharma’s centuries deprived him of
the honour.

It would be interesting to compare Bumrah with one
of our country’s spin greats. Bhagwat Subramanya
Chandrasekhar is to spin bowling as Jasprit Jasbir Singh
Bumrah is to pace bowling. The statistics would be
surprising. Chandrasekhar bagged 242 wickets in Test
but scored just 167 runs. In all First Class matches, he
bagged 1,063 wickets but scored a mere 600 runs. In fact,
Chandrasekhar is the only cricketer in Test history with a
bag of 200 or more wickets who has bagged more wickets
than the number of runs that he has scored. Jasprit
Bumrah seems to be on a path to emulate the unenvious
record. He has 49 Test wickets against his 14 runs and
in all First Class matches he has 138 wickets to his 134
run. In his heydays, Chandrashekar was the fastest spin
bowler due to his polio affected right arm which made
him a spin bowler with a unique grip and action. Jasprit
Bumrah is currently India’s fastest pace bowler with his
very unique delivery action.
