A

group exhibition at Samarah Fine Art in Whitefish,
Montana, spotlights landscapes and figures in
moments of time. The show will include works by
Robert Coombs, Shanna Kunz, Joseph Alleman and Rett
Ashby, who each captivate with scenes from various times of
day and in all seasons. Each moment is fleeting, but shows
the beauty of the natural world in their distinct painting styles.
For his painting Refuge, depicting a young woman and
her violin outside on a farm, Coombs was first inspired by a
farm he passed almost weekly. “Each time it lifted my soul
and gave me a brief escape,” he says. “It’s especially beautiful
in late winter [or] early spring. When I listened to Leila play
her violin during a church service, it reminded me of those
same feelings and I knew I needed to combine the two in a
painting. I hope the painting shares with others the feelings
I experienced and enjoyed.”
Western Skies, by Alleman, depicts an old shed just as the
night is about to take over. Describing the piece he says, “The
inspiration for Western Skies came during an evening walk
with my dog as we wandered around some old sheds in a
nearby field. It was dusk and the drifting clouds and fading
light caught my eye. The mood of the piece changed a little as
I approached the canvas—a little less dark. Still, just enough
of a snapshot to capture that moment.”
Another landscape in the show, Ashby’s Beside the
Meadow, was 50 years in the making. “I lived in this area
and drove by it daily, studying the lights of various times of
day, weather, seasons,” he says. “I enjoyed the unique colors,
which inspired me to capture it with my palette.”
The exhibition opens August 1 with a reception from 6 to
9 p.m. and hangs throughout the month.
