child my heart was captivated by these magical
byways, and my imagination was ensorcelled
by their beauty. Over the years the Llano
Quemado (burned plain) region near Taos
has held particular sway in my work due to
the alluring history of the West and the vast
mingling of cultures. This is my native land and
hopefully this new work conveys my love and
passion for this incredible treasure.”
Bowman’s Western scenes have a different
focus—concentrating on how the light plays
off the land, where it falls along the figures
and casts shadows in other places. “Scarlet
Conclusion is inspired by my favorite time of
the day in one of my favorite places to paint, the
southwest desert—in this case southern Utah,”
he shares. “This painting depicts the transition
at the end of the day (from either work or travel)
and a time for respite and reflection. Something
is concluding here besides the day, but the
situation and his frame of mind are left solely
to the viewer to decide.”
Desert Riders at Sundown, by Dean, is
another painting at dusk. The work shows
riders taking what are likely their final strides
to a camp over the mountain crest as the sun
wanes. Solliday’s Cowboy Sunset also depicts
this much-beloved hour, with his work showing
two cowboys talking as the pink and green
hued sunset burns in the background.
The Los Angeles-based gallery will have these
and other works on view August 10 to 31.
