loads, control and maintain the land
and livestock, and serve as a loyal and
dedicated personal companion,” says
Edd Kellerman, executive director at
the Phippen Museum.
Henry brings to the show an oil
titled Leather and Grace, a realistic
depiction of a horse facing forward
toward the viewer, but with blocks
of color making up parts of its body
as well as the background, adding
an abstract element. In Sturgill’s The
Mane Event, a horse with a stripe of
white on its face nibbles on a tuft of
grass.
“My equine models have both long
ears and short, and I love to celebrate
the elegance, mystery and grace of
the horse, along with the charming
happiness of the burro,” says Meikle,
who brings both an oil painting and
a bronze to the show this year. “I can
see my corral from my studio window,
so my models offer up countless ideas
for paintings and sculpture, only
requiring a carrot or two!”
An opening reception and
members’ preview will be held on
Friday, August 2, at 5:30 p.m.
